if you move Dube or Valimaki (or both!) in the deal it becomes easier to envision. But I am not as hopeful as some here.
Maybe we could get something like Silfverberg? Not sure if that's even worth it as he has fallen off a cliff production wise last two seasons.
Maybe Dallas would be interested in retaining a big chunk of Seguin just to escape that contract long term? Miro Heskanien and Valimaki probably know each other, also some other finns on the team so maybe there's interest in that player. We'd need them to retain like 40-50% for this to be reasonable.
Shooting for a retained Kane might not actually be that crazy of an option. I wonder how much it would cost.

The cost speculated above is way too much for a one year rental, even Kane. Plus he has a full NMC.

I disagree. We really are trying for a cup in the next 1-3 years with our cap structure. Might as well push all the chips in. Next year might be the peak chance with all the players still within their prime years.

It's still got to be a reasonable deal. 2 players plus a prospect plus a first is too much for one season. If there was a chance Kane would extend at a decent price for a retirement deal, sure.

It’s 50/50 at this point whether Valimaki even sticks as an NHL regular. Every team has a couple Valimakis in their system. He has very little value.

If a 50% Kane was available for even one year, it's not going to be a reasonable deal. Throw that notion out the window. Teams would line up trying to get what many might believe is the missing piece to win the Stanley Cup. A proven playoff performer who actually elevates his play come playoff time. And elevates the play of his teammates.
Some team would be prepared to pay an exorbitant price.

It’s clear the Flames are going for it all the next couple years. If they can do it, they will try to get whatever it takes

Agreed- I think at this point there may just be value in dispensing of his 1.5 mil cap hit. That's the only reason I'm including him in trades. I think he's a 2nd or 3rd worth of value, maybe. Big Maybe. Dube is also not worth a whole lot. That's why two of them + 1st or prospect is actually not a big package at all.

I agree that they would. I just don't think the exorbitant price would be worth that gamble.
Then again, most cup contenders can't afford even half price Kane.
One thing - Kane is a proven PO performer but you have to look back to 2015 to find it. He put up points in first round losses the next two seasons and hasn't been in the POs since (unless you count the play-in win against the no goods). I'm not saying he's not a PO performer any more, but who knows? He's a lot older, has his rings and would be biding his time for the contract he really wants.
I don't think he waives for anyone anyway so it's moot.

I think he means a trade, which means salary would be going out as well.

Kane is a one year rental. So it's a major league gamble on a one shot. I'd rather do what TB did and get a Perry.

Right now, Flames have ~$2.14M in space with the following players:
LW - 5
-Huberdeau (1 * 5.9)
-Mangiapane (3 * 5.8)
-Dube (2 * 2.3)
-Pelletier (2 * 0.863333)
-Lucic (1 * 5.25) (NMC) (M-NTC, 10-team T list)
C - 4
-Lindholm (2 * 4.85)
-Kadri (7 * 7)
-Backlund (2 * 5.35) (M-NTC, 10-team T list)
-Rooney (2 * 1.3)
RW - 3
-Coleman (5 * 4.90) (NTC, 24/25-26/27: 10-team T list)
-Toffoli (2 * 4.25)
-Lewis (1 * 0.8)
LD - 4
-Hanifin (2 * 4.95) (M-NTC, 8-team NT list)
-Kylington (2 * 2.5)
-Zadorov (2 * 3.75)
-Valimaki (1 * 1.55)
RD - 3
-Weegar (1 * 3.25)
-Tanev (2 * 4.5) (M-NTC, 10-team NT list)
-Andersson (4 * 4.55)
G - 2
-Markstrom (4 * 6) (NMC)
-Vladar (1 * 0.75).
I think they just go into the UFA market, sign one of the wingers (Rodrigues, Milano, Kessel). No need to expend assets on a trade. Flames can then run with 22 with the AHL team in CGY.
I personally like Kessel. He scored 52 points while giving less than full effort on a terrible team. But he is mega-talented and can elevate when necessary. See Penguins playoff runs as an example.

Keep in mind for the 23/24 season, capfriendly has the Flames with 16 players signed and ~$10.1 million in cap space to sign the rest assuming the cap goes to $83.5 mil.
Weegar's reported extension is going to take a significant portion of that and assuming Wolf takes over as the backup, it will be less than $3 mil in cap space with 18 players signed.
There is going to need to be some salary moving out between now and the start of next season if they bring in a player with more than 1 year term remaining.

I still think Lucic gets moved. But it might take another draft pick to do it.

He's scored every year he's been to the playoffs, even with some sorry Hawk teams of late. They only made the playoffs because of him those later years. I have little doubt the playoffs would fire him up again.

At this stage (trading a 1st to unload Monahan) I think you just have to keep him for the last year even if it's going to cost another high draft pick. It's not like the coming season will be the end of this team's window. This team may be at a point in a four years where they badly need to graduate young players from the AHL and the 2023 draft is a good one. It's possible a team at the trade deadline may value Lucic's toughness and the Flames may even recoup an asset for him. I know he's got a NTC but if he's sitting games in the press box he may be receptive to a trade to play more in what could be his last NHL season.

There’s just not a lot of teams that could even take him now though. I’m fine with him staying, it’s one more year and he’s great for the room and adds some snarl. Could he Looch’s last hurrah so he might have an extra gear this year as well.

There's a good fw for Valimaki swap out there. And I think the fanbase will be surprised.

I agree that players get devalued fast but disagree on Valimaki. Have you seen him play this past year? I have seen a good chunk of Heat games this past year and Valimaki's problem is not in his head, he is just not good anymore, it is that simple. His skating is worse than Monahan's, and for a dman that just won't work in the NHL. He is a completely different player after his injuries and I would bet he won't ever play in the NHL unless he fixes his skating
If we get a 3rd rounder for him, that's a big win
