Hopefully on five years the Flames are looking at a full tank (following the cup win of course). Having a pair of immovable huge contracts may be the only way to force ownership into a rebuild.

As soon as the huberdeau deal was given out, the Flames fate was sealed, and they were going to end up being crappy in five or so years. You might as well pile the 5 years from now crappiness.

But wouldn’t those final years be also easily bought out or do buyouts count as cap space? I would think the Flames can easily recoup that money by just going to the second round of the playoffs.
Another poster mentioned it earlier about if you get good value for the first say 4 years in a 7 year deal, it will be worth it. It almost looks like that’s the way todays contracts especially for top players are structured. Two years are basically the signing bonus.

Buyouts 100% effect the cap. I don't think anything would be saved by buying out Huberdeau

But if the contracts are front end loaded which I believe is the case with Huberdeau it won’t be that bad. (May have already been discussed)

Nurse, Skinner and Bob are infinitely worse.

He will actually more than likely live up to the number for the first 3-4 seasons.

According to CapFriendly, we don't know yet whether his contract includes a no-trade clause.

From capfriendly

A Jonathan Huberdeau buyout spans 6 years, has a cost of $6,666,667 and savings of $3,333,333. Huberdeau is 35 years of age at the time of the buyout; therefore, the buyout ratio is 2/3. With $10,000,000 in salary remaining, the cost is $6,666,667, and the savings are $3,333,333. Buyouts span twice the length of the remaining years and because there are 3 years remaining in the contract, the buyout length is 6 years. The buyout cap hit is displayed in the Cap Hit Calculations table below

Huberdeau's isn't front-loaded. He gets paid $10.5 million each year of the contract. The mix between signing bonus and salary changes from year-to-year, but the total is the same each season.

Saying Kadri at $7MM is the worst contract in the league is a really poor take…. Darnell Nurse says hello, Erik Karlsson says hello, Bob says hello……..

Even if you’re not a fan of these moves, you need to stop and think about this from a distance, not in isolation. I would’ve preferred Kadri and Hubes were both 24 but those guys aren’t available right now. Almost never are.

What were the other options? Do nothing? Trade Markstrom, let Darryl retire and spend the next 3-∞ years rebuilding?

Short of getting in a time machine and going back to convince Tre to trade both Johnny and Chucky last summer, there’s not much management could have done here.

Flames had a window to win and Tre made the best moves possible to make that happen. Sure, they’re possibly going to backfire hard in 5 years and we’ll be the next Chicago or Minny or SJ but whatever. Better to go all in and lose in spectacular fashion than never play a hand and bleed chips until you’re eliminated because making a big move felt too scary.

Naz will become a fan favourite for you guys within the first month of the season. Still one of my favourite players.

7 x 7 is a fine deal. Naz isn't just about scoring,he will shut McDavid down and adds tons of sandpaper.

You hate the term but that is what it takes to sign the second best forward in free agency in Western Canada. The Flames have certainly bounced back from the shunning we got from our America drafted and developed superstars. I really feel this team is positioned well for a playoff run. Deep at center, the blueline, an elite goalie and hall of fame coach. We also have some star power on the wings and multiple guys who won before.

This isn’t a Western Canada issue, all high dollar contracts are taking players well past their best before date….. it’s just how it is now. Brent Burns, Erik Carlson, Jamie Benn…..

I think Sutter is key to the whole approach the Flames have taken.

He's probably expressed to management that he came to win, not coach a young team through a rebuild. So tearing it down means he - the best coach the Flames have had twice - will be gone and the team's chances of victory recede far into the misty future.

In that sense, they felt they had to act for the here and now, as they still had enough pieces that they were closer to winning now than to predicting a future date by which they might be competitive again.

A couple of these contracts will reek in 6 years, but between now and then at least there will be a shot.

Especially after coming off the season he had and he hasn't played a game yet for the Flames.

Kadri is tied for 77th with 8 other players (51st among forwards, 28th among centers) for how much he makes and is within $500k of the 100th place player.

It's actually a really good contract. Yeah sure, the last couple of years might be an overpayment as is the case with most good free agents signing. As someone else mentioned, it is the cost of doing business. You either don't sign any premiere free agents at all, or you deal with it.

That’s a fair point most guys sign these huge contracts with a lot of rough years. Look no further than the summer of 2016. I just hope this is worth it for more than half the life of the deal.

Lots of talk the cap will see significant increases in the coming years and $7Migjr be acceptable for a 3rd line C at that point?

But what grit? I'm hoping a hard 50. Still enough to be able to move for a few years. Let that belt sander work.

Plus, in 5 years 7/per won’t seem that bad.
