If Monahan is actually 100% Healthy again I would have rather just ran it back with him and used the first in a different deal for a younger player than committed to $7x7 of Kadri

Monahan being 100% healthy does not equate to Monahan playing 100% healthy.
Go big or go home (to perpetual mediocrity).
Many Flames fans are used to us playing small/safe but look where it's gotten us over the years.

Monahan has claimed he's "felt the best he ever has" every single offseason.
Absolutely love the guy, but man's not healthy. At least nowhere even close to 100% and what he used to be.

Me too, but the recovery on the first hip surgery was a season. I would expect the recovery time for his second surgery to be the same and Calgary doesn't have the luxury of waiting a season to make a push.

Salary would have needed to be cleared either way. Not sure what young players a cap dump and 1st would have got.

Just a hunch and it's probably been mentioned but I can see somehow the Jackets involved. Player X and or y and pick to shed salary to Mtl, Flames get one of those players.
SM gets to play with his best friend on the Flames JG. Gudbranson to protect them.

I bet he's perfectly healthy... to lead a normal, off-ice life like the rest of us.
To be a competitive athlete in the toughest league on the planet is another kettle of fish.

Future Considerations these days means Kent Hughes buying Treliving a nice steak next time they see each other.
Flames are getting zip

If we had to send out a first, would rather it have been with Monahan than Lucic. Best case, he has a bounce back and you move him at some point. Worst case he is still better than Lucic. Again, Lucic’s no trade clause maybe played a factor, but not great asset management. But is what it is, Flames line up looks decent. If we could get a bonafide top-6 winger than we are legit.

In a perfect world. But I totally understand that Tre couldn’t take that risk.

This is an amazing trade for a rebuilding team absolutely fantastic for the Habs. They get a 1st and a soon to be 28 year old who can rebuild his value and flipped for more assets. With the cap space from Price they have the room to make it work.
This is the preferred player for the Flames to move if they were adding a top 2 line center. The price to move Monahan was stiff but the Flames roster is much better than it was yesterday. Another cup winner and a great player who will fit the identity of the team.
Absolute crazy offseason

First, we can't know if Monahan is 100% good to go until it is too late to do anything about it if he isn't.
And second, you can try and trade the 1st for a good young player, but the Flames wouldn't have had the cap space for anyone significant (and no one is trading their good, young, cost-controlled players for a pick)

If Monahan isn’t good to go and struggles to return then you throw him on LTIR and can use a first to add a piece with that cap space.
I just don’t like the idea of moving a 1st to be able to sign Kadri to a $7x7. Whole point of overpaying in UFA is you don’t have to give up an asset to get the player, if you have to move a 1st anyways and still overpay on the contract then it’s not really a good deal IMO

The 1st is to create the capspace that you didn't have to sign the FA
And if Monahan can't go, and you throw him on LTIR, now you have to find a replacement mid-season, and that is a lot more difficult

The top box shouldn't be 1st - 24th, shouldn't it be 'if CGY finishes 1st - 13th'
