I went from “Tkachuk traded, bummed out, this seasons going to suck.”
To “TOTALLY BACK IN!”

I happened to refresh twitter when it was first announced as "Tkachuk traded to FLA", and no details on the return. My first thought was "okay, this is actually happening".

It was only a few minutes later when Friedman posted this:

https://twitter.com/user/status/1550679590573690885

At first my brain literally could not comprehend -- not only did we get Huberdeau AND Weegar, but we ALSO got a first and a prospect?!? It was the equivalent to "trade is one for one" -- the math didn't add up.

Honestly, it still doesn't.

My bro texted me and simply asked if I was following the Chucky trade, no other details. I was not and jumped on CP to get the deets.

I remember my first reaction wasn't as positive as it should have been, not because I didn't think it was amazing, but I assumed there must be something I didn't understand or else how could it be real. It muted my excitement in the moment while I scoured this site and the internet for "what's the catch" I'm missing.

7. Huberdeau signs! Can't lose now!
8. Weegar likely to sign
9. How the hell did this all happen?
Basically this sums up the Flames off season.

one of the best parts is Oiler/Canuck fans now acting like Tkachuk is the greatest player in the league

100% of them would have said Huberdeau is better a month ago but now Tkachuk is a young generational player lol

Tkachuk is a prominent face and personality but hockey-wise he was frustrating.

Tried the same move endlessly, would have break out games only after you were frustrated by how quiet he had been, and fought at very poor times when it would set the team back. Also when stones were thrown at him I.e. Kassian/Doughty/Muzzin, he would make a fuss but never answered on the ice. You expected a big game from him but once a player was under his skin he would disappear in the games.

These are things you only really pick up on watching him for 82 as a fan. He does a lot of good things quietly, but I never found him to be a very gratifying player to follow. The clean hits on kassian and his antics in that one Detroit game with all the suspensions were some of the few moments where I really appreciated his pest side. But they're more infrequent than most outside fans would think.

He has many more quiet games in him than #### disturber games.

I was on CP frequently as usually when the trade went down. I wasn't AFK for too long, but then I refreshed and saw the trade thread and it was already at 3 pages.

I was pretty happy with the return, but that turned to apprehension once I saw that both players were pending UFAs and Huberdeau is 29 (I thought he was younger for some reason).

I still have some qualms about the trade, but overall, I like it and think we did better than expected considering our hand was forced. I still think it's a good trade for both teams on paper. A rare win-win where both teams can be happy.

Tkachuk seemed like he was either scoring 3 or 4 points or 4th liner level useless

very good player still don't get me wrong but this return is a sure win

In my mind, I've always mixed up Huberdeau and Drouin (both French Canadian players named Jonathan, 3rd overall picks, drafted by a team in Florida). When I first saw it, I was thinking it was Drouin, and even then, with the additional pieces, I thought it was an okay return for a player who wanted out.

Once I got my Francophone Jonathans straightened out, I realized it was even better than I thought.

I had him younger in my head too. I think because prior to last year I really only paid attention to him as a rookie. And I ignored the years between.

It was weird. Even on some invisible nights because that top line was so consistently productive you would see a couple apples next to his name at the end of the night and you wouldn't have guessed he was even a factor.

Round one against Dallas was a great example. He collected a few points but by the eyeball test you wouldn't have guessed that he had a single point until his goal in game 7 after people were giving him ####.

Definitely feel like a significant amount of points he accumulated were just from being around the puck while Johnny and Lindy made magic. So good for him on cashing in on what will likely be his best ever season points-wise.

I texted my dad that it was Huberdeau, didn't say anything about +,+,+. He called me said holy #### Tre. pulled this one out of the fire, then I told him +,+,+ and he was dumbfounded.

The return is unbelievable. I can't think of trades that the Flames returns are comparable, Maybe the whole Lindholm / Hanifin, if you consider that Fox was already a lost asset and Ferland was already done. Maybe Kipper if you only look at hindsight. Maybe when you look at trading two 50 pt players for a 100pt McDonald.

I think if you want a comparable scale you need to look at the way Toronto took us for a ride on Phaunef and Gilmour.

I think he will take his time at signing. If he signs right away, will probably be a shorter term bridge deal imo.

If he gets more ice time, then he may have improved stats, and his price goes up.

My thoughts about him, I do hope we get him locked up for 5-6 yrs.

Ryan Pike was on with Steinberg yesterday and was talking about 5-6 x 7, I think anything much over $6AAV is too much for Weegar, he’s only played around 300 games so the body of work is not quite there like it is for Huberdeau.

My other favourite part is how quickly rival fans went from "Huberdeau's a superstar and Weegar's a first pairing D-man, the ONLY way you got this return is because they're UFA's next summer and there's no way Huberdeau is signing in Calgary".......to "Well, he's over the hill and you're screwed with that contract, congrats, I guess".

The last time I was as elated as the return for Chucky was when we picked up Dougie Hamilton. I had to fight back tears of joy. Both times.

So what implications does the Kadri signing have on signing Weegar? Not too much cap space beyond this year when Huberdeau’s contract kicks in.

Does this mean Weegar (or at least another defencemen) has to get moved out? I was actually really happy to have our current group of defencemen together for a couple of years and was looking forward to having Weegar signed long term, and I’m not sure how that happens now.
