Francis doing Francis things, as he has done before...try out a "hot take" on some out of town show and see if it gets any wider traction as a rumor around the web (which then makes him an insider and gets to be on more shows and raise his profile), and if it does, present it in the local market.

Nobody is upset. I just don’t think buying out Monahan in the last year of his deal is smart at all, given the situation next off season.

I always appreciate information like this shared. That’s what makes this board great. I just don’t agree. That’s all.

Might have made sense if they signed Gaudreau and Tkachuk to matching ten mill extensions. But like the other poster said 2m next year would be a hard pill to swallow.

Maybe if the Flames were struggling to sign Johnny and Tkatchuk, I can that. But Treliving essentially gave himself a reset with the Huberdeau / Weegar contracts, so now there's no real urgency to trade Lucic or buyout Monahan, because they aren't in a cap crunch, and both contracts fall off next year when they would need the money (if they were to successfully extend Huberdeau and Weegar).

I also think you take the risk of him coming back now too. I don't know if he's the value cap to dump (Lucic might be cheaper to dump)

There is a cap crunch if they want to add anyone else. I would have bought him out. Cap space right now is one of the biggest assets in the league since no one has any with the flat cap.

I’m in the camp of ride this year out and save the 11+ mil next year. Sign Weegar and Huberdeau and add someone next year. Don’t add 2 mil dead space next year.

Monny would have been bought out if healthy and only if CALGARY DESPERATELY NEEDED THE ROOM.

Since he isn't healthy and they don't need the room, it's a moo point.

Monny can't be bought out while injured.

Also that $2M cap hit from the buyout severely hampers what they can add to the roster for this season - but more importantly - beyond.

Huberdeau is probably going to get $10.5M and Weegar will get around $6M.

They could maybe add a player with a few years on their deal left at around $5M and that would be it.

Trading the contracts of Lucic & Monahan or letting Monahan play out the year and trading Lucic are pretty much the only way to go now IMO

Necas is still not signed in Carolina, and they only have $1,883,083 in space with a 20 man roster.

Necas for Coronato?

Oh God no. Coranato is going to be key to the team. We will need high skill players on entry level deals

I have no doubt that if Monahan was healthy he would be bought out.

We only have $1.2m to add to this team, with very few options in a way to clear space.

Right now we have to either eat half of Lucic’a contract or add a sweetener to move him.

Lucic is 6million against the cap, but only 1million in actual dollars.

That will be very attractive to the cheaper teams who need to make the cap floor.

And have young players that could use some muscle around them so they don't get abused like last season * cough* Anaheim
