F1 needs to be much more liberal with their use of stop and go penalties for causing accidents and dangerous pit releases.

Was Ferrari going for the fastest lap to deny Max? That's the only thing that makes sense to pit Sainz when they did. Otherwise they should have split that last stint into two.

I'm curious what they can do, pretty much any contact will kill the race for someone involved in an incident so Tsunoda gets hit, spins, goes to the back stuck in traffic even if his car could perform and get back ahead.
I'm thinking forget the time penalties and apply qualifying penalties either in the form of positions or time. Maybe something like lets say Verstappen causes an accident on Gasly who was making a push, next race they gain/lose the amount of positions the accident caused. Get taken out of the race? Swap positions on the qualifying results. Basically something worth more than 5 seconds when you already disabled the other persons car.

Sainz had a pretty big blister on that tire, I'm assuming they didn't want to risk him pushing to keep the position or gain a position and spin or blow a tire when he could make a pit and get back to the position and maybe more. One of the best parts of F1 is the management and strategies.

If you push a driver off the track and cause him to lose positions, the penalty should put the offending driver behind them. Guy falls to the back of the field? Sorry, back for you, too.

But you are trying to enforce this swap during a race where seconds matter and would probably interfere with other drivers somehow, can't stop the race to make this change either, only time it would work is during a yellow or red flag. Even if somehow they were able to get the offending car behind, many times they end up retiring the car at some point.
My point is basically whatever happened in that race is over and done and not much you can do to make it right at that time.

F1 needs to bring back stop and go penalties. No adding 5 seconds, 10 seconds etc. A stop and go would cost 20 plus seconds.

Why? Tell them they have one lap to get behind the other driver. They pull over to the side on a straight, and let everyone through. There have been many races in the past where the driver not at fault ends up losing many positions, while the one at fault gets a small penalty and maintains their place. I'm just saying, you screw up some one's race, you don't get to be in front of them.

Maybe they could do what SailGP does. Wrong another boat, you have to go behind it to clear the penalty, though SailGP penalties rarely result in someone getting knocked out like in F1. I get what they are trying to do with just time penalties, and on some courses the 5 second penalty is significant where others it isn’t. Stop and go also seems really punitive and hard to overcome on any track. I wonder if they got rid of it because sponsors and TV rights holders complained (along with the teams). I think in general everyone likely wants some sort of penalty but not anything too much it can’t be overcome if you have a fast car. Grid places might be okay too. Do something stupid that affects safety and it’s minimum 3 places. Even if you win you are 4th. I don’t have a clear understanding of when they currently apply grid penalties and when they don’t.

There is no perfect solution to the penalties. If you make it harsh like you go behind the driver you wronged its going to ruin racing. I don't like drivers shoving drivers off the track but it's hard enough to pass as it is.

Yeah the biggest problem is these incidents often result in a driver getting knocked out of the race, sure you could penalize the offending driver in many ways but that doesn't help the driver that is now out of this race. Like KelVarnsen said its hard to pass in F1 and you don't want to mess with the flow of the race either. All contact penalties should be handled on the next race if it changes the outcome of the current race, keep time penalties for track limits and other offenses.
Gaining and losing positions on the next race doesn't help either because if you award positions you are punishing the whole field, that's why the position swap would work although if I knew I was swapping positions there could be ways to throw qualifying etc.
Work in progress it just sucks to see drivers knocked out due to no fault of their own especially turn 1 incidents.

Oh wow, that would be a fun one to watch this weekend with Kvyat. It's the road circuit at IMS which is actually a decent layout for the heavy road cars.
Updated Standings after France!!
Congrats to TimSJ and Woob...again. Lol you guys are killing it this year. Both of you had 3/10 slots and 7/10 Top 10. Dammage79 was a point back with 6/10 top 10 slots.
No real change as Woob pulled another 7pts over FurnaceFace in second to lead by 21pts. TomSJ leaps from 5th to 3rd.
Speede5 this was your 3rd miss and Dammage79 your 2nd (next one is goose egg).

If LeClerc didn't crash, this would have been a hell of a round for us. I see I would have had the top 6, but FlamesRule and 3thirty would have had the top 8!
