Hanifin and Kylington are the same age, so there is likely lots more upside to his game and he's further ahead. That said, he's also likely the more appealing asset to get return via trade, because he's the significantly better player at this point.
I think options need to be considered. But I go from feel like we have an amazing Top 4 right now with the addition of Weegar, which immediately goes to, feels like it's missing a piece if we move out Hanifin. I agree, the best from Kylington is likely still to come (same with Hanifin) but it's a bigger hit to lose Hanifin right now by a long shot imo.

I wouldn't trade a dman unless its a massive overpay like a youngish high end NHL forward

That's 10 D men, and that's not including Micheal Stone who the Flames could bring back.

Two of those guys are Welinski and Gravel replacements. Sutter preferred Stone over the other two last year.

How much do you reckon you'd have to add to mangiapane to get to barzal value?

I would put him on a "3rd" line with Toffoli. Which I would basically refer to as a "softer minute" scoring line. The Lindholm/Huberdeau & Backlund/Coleman lines start against the tougher competition leaving that line to start against other teams 3rd lines. Still a step up in competition from the AHL but at the same time he's not tasked with shutting down the Crosbys and McDavids or required to be a primary offensive weapon.

I really think we see a trade moving out one of Hanifin, Kylington, Valimaki or Mackey.
Comes down to what we want back as far as who gets traded.
Meloche & Gilbert will be in the AHL.
That leaves 7 guys left, meaning one of Mackey/Kylington/Valimaki is eating popcorn most nights, until we have to deal with an injury.

Why would we double his salary and lock him to term, when he's a full time Calgary resident who re signs for minimum every year. He's in the press box 90 percent of the time

I like him a lot and he’s committed here, but he’s pretty overrated by some. He certainly isn’t a Gudbranson replacement. They are very different players.

I think that would still leave 8 and 2 eating popcorn..
Hanifin-Andersson
Kylington-Tanev
Zadorov-Weegar
Valimaki-Mackey

Man, Michael Stone is awesome. Loves this city, loves the organization, plays for basically league minimum, and when he does come in and play, he plays more often than not like a top-four defenseman - he was a beast for us in the games he played last year and playoffs, stepping in like a frickin' champ. That's way more than you can ask for of a 7th D-man. We're lucky to have him, and I hope he's back again.

I agree with all of this other than playing like a top-4.
I think he can be on any teams top 6 but I don't think he is much more than a 5-6 guy.
Still appreciate him and wouldn't be against retaining him.

I'm not sure what is typical, but with 7 defenseman in the NHL, that leaves 8 in the AHL. And out of those 15, there doesn't appear to be a clear cut ECHL guy. It seems like a lot.
Including RFA's and Monahan, we have 24 professional forwards. There will be some PTO's I get it, but I don't think it's a stretch to speculate the Flames will be trying to trade a d-man for a forward.
I would trade Valimaki at this point. Reclamation project for reclamation project type trade.

Defenseman usually take longer to develop, so I think that there is still decent value in valimaki. I mean, somehow Eric branstrom in Ottawa still is considered to have some value and he is way more far gone than valimaki.
The issue in Calgary is that he is likely to not get a chance for real minutes. That is not going to sit well with him. I think that a trade for a former first round forward, maybe D+2, is a good bet.

Don't look back at the 2017 1st round....could have had one there.
