They got 3.4M to sign Yamamoto and Macleod. They probably need to sign a 13th forward unless they plan on dressing 7D each game.
Not a whole lot of wiggle room to deal with injuries where you can't put the player on LTIR. Something has to give as Yamamoto will get at least 3M.

Maybe. It only takes one team that believes they can be the team to unearth his potential. That said the Oilers don't have a lot of leverage as the rest of the league is aware of their salary cap situation.

How can they put Smith on LTIR. It still doesn’t even make sense.

I laughed when the GM's said the cap is not circumvented in this way... of course it is because most of them do it.

Not just Nurse's contract though. They're still on the hook for Neal and Sekera's buyouts for next year, that contribute over $3M to the cap.

So assuming Smith and Klefbom are on LTIR, the Oilers currently have 10 forwards, 7 dmen and 2 goalies signed with about 3.4 million in cap space left and Yamamoto, McLeod and another forward left to sign. Based on this contract, Yamamoto should come in around 3 million, I am assuming McLeod is at least 1.4 and the other forward at 800K. So they would need to move about 2 million in salary.
Can’t imagine there is a huge market for Foegle. Kinda hope someone offersheets McLeod but that never happens in the NHL.

McLeod is engaged to one of the Habs owners daughter, he would love to get out of mulletville to get back east.

I bet that the Oilers will be forced to trade Yamamoto (or they'll lose him via an offer sheet). I can't imagine many other teams wanting to take either Foegele or Puljujarvi off their hands (and if so, they'll come at the price of a draft pick via a cap dump).
That, or they're going to be forced to place someone like Puljujarvi on waivers where they risk losing him for nothing.
Oilers really showing the rest of the NHL how to not manage the salary cap.

seems like a odd move unless they have a deal lined up...they have no cap
and I don't see many teams taking him at that hit

I love how some Oiler fans regrettably in my life still claim Pool Party is better than Tkachuk.
Tkachuk: signs for $9.5M/yr on a longterm deal
Pool Party: 1 year, $3M hahahaha

They are really hamstrung financially moving forward now this year and next, the group they have is pretty set barring a major move. I'd expect Yamamoto will get 3.5 mil-ish and one of those two is going to have to be moved shortly as they have about 3 mil (*working LTIR with Klefblom and Smith) in space left with 3 forwards to sign so they won't be able to keep both those guys without another move.
I am surprised they got Kane for as cheap as they did and fit him in though.
And yeah the Smith move is super shady, declaring he will be injured all year when he was just playing... reeks of Smith and the Oilers having some kind of handshake deal.
LTIR in the NHL is being abused pretty badly lately
