Tanking sucks.

Edmonton got nothing for all those years they tanked. McDavid was a lockout plus dumb luck.

No fan should ever cheer for there team to suck before the season starts. Loser Edmonton style attitude

Doubt their fans cared when they smoked us in the playoffs.

Edmonton got nothing for all those years they tanked because they sucked at building a team. Edmonton does everything wrong, always will.

...yet they're still somehow better off than we are, so why they suck at everything - apparently they suck slightly less than us at building a hockey team.

Its called luck...is the guy who won the lottery better at handling his finances then you? He has more money.

Tanking seems to be the only way to win. Maybe not first overall but need a few top 3s over a 3 to 6 year span. Look at all the Stanley Cup winners. MacKinnon and Makar, Stammer and Hedman. Kane and Toews, exception may be Kings but they still had Doughty. Then you add a bit of luck trading and or finding late rounders. We can say tanking isn't for us but if you want another 30 years of losing then we can continue to draft mid and late first round all day long

Hmm. Something tells me the odds in this analogy are quite different.

To win the lottery you need to first buy a ticket. You need to create your luck. Ain't gonna get any luck drafting in the middle of the draft.

Learn to let go of the old way of thinking.

This league is not setup like European sports. If you suck, you get punished with demotion to a lesser league. In the NHL if you suck, you get rewarded with a decent shot at a top-3 pick (reminder, Makar was 4th OA). So why in god's name would you chase the playoffs as a bubble team and get nothing for it, instead of chasing bottom three for a shot at a star player?

There's no shame playing within the rules setup by the league, and it would make our hockey more enjoyable over the next 5-10 years instead of wallowing in mediocrity since 1995.

Edmonton don’t know how to build a team

I prefer rebuilding vs tanking. Build it the right way, and yes losing while rebuilding is part of it

Calgary needs to cut their losses. I’ve been vocal about going all in with Tkachuk and Gaudreau for as long as I can remember, but guess what? Flames were dealt a terrible hand.

Both guys are gone and they are now left with a middling team. Not good enough to win anything, not bad enough to draft anyone special.

It’s literally a worst case scenario right now. To me, running it back and trying to compete this season after losing your two best players is misguided at best and detrimental to your franchise at worst.

Time to accumulate all of the draft picks and prospects that you can. There are no quick fixes here.

How good is the 2023 draft? I doubt it's 2003. Is it like 2005 with a franchise player at the top and several great players to take after?

I guess we should overpay for aged UFAs and make bad trades so we can limp into 8th place lest we draft another Sam Bennett at 4th.

in my opinion accumulating as many picks as possible from anywhere in the draft gives you a better chance at a successful rebuild than hoping for that top 3 OA jackpot. of course, having both is the best scenario but if we're not gonna be Arizona/Chicago level bad, then I want like 14 spins of the draft wheel next summer.

That Bennett draft was a bad draft. For a rebuild, the timing being bad with the right draft is a huge part of it.

I agree. In a cap world, you need players outperforming their contracts in every roster position.

Posting Byron Bader's analysis of draft position and outcomes for no reason.

Still can't decide whether going for a top 5 pick or filling out the rosters with 30 year olds, 'competing,' and drafting 15th overall is more of a 'crapshoot' for building a contending team...

So who are the guys from pick 1-5 that make up the 2.3% that aren't NHLers? Yakupov for one. Grigorenko?
