There are other markets that tanked or were naturally bad at the right time and it paid off. I'm convinced Calgary is a market that requires good drafting to have any true success. And even when they do it's not a guarantee they even stick around so the window is even shorter. At least Bedard is Canadian, but even getting a couple picks in the top half of the next year's draft would be more desirable than yet another season where they make the playoffs and lose early.

The team just lost their biggest star, and they're about to lose their second biggest star. Attendance slumping seems like a pretty good possibility anyways.

If they get a p/g roster player in the Tkachuk trade, the Flames still probably make the playoffs. Sure attendance will be lower, but not by a crushing amount. If the Flames go full Young Guns 2.0, get ready to see a half-empty arena for 41 nights a year.

"Shot" is the key word here. If you don't land a top-5 pick, you just liquidated your roster, have no franchise player to build around, just had a brutal season, and it'll be minimum 4-5 years before you're relevant again.
