The NHL should be investigating the Mike Smith LTIR thing. The guy was apparently healthy enough to play until the last game and now suddenly may never play again? How convenient. He didn't even look that bad, other than giving the puck away a lot like he usually did. I sense shenanigans on this one. Have they even said what the injury is? Being old and having the pain from wear and tear doesn't count.
The NHL unfortunately has never cared one bit about LTIR shenanigans. I doubt they start now. As long the Oilers pay their own medical staff to say he can't play that always seems good enough for the NHL.

They let Tampa and Vegas abuse it…..they are not going to do anything now

Upper body injury. Split ends.

I think it’s difficult to gauge the amount of pain pro athletes are willing to play through. I’m sure a 40 year old goalie has plenty of problems that are simply nagging, or can’t be fixed.
It sucks EDM managed to get rid of most of their bad money, but it’s EDM they’ve been turning good players into anchors since I can remember.

He also has trade value. To me, it just means you give him more of a white glove treatment if you can get assets for him in a rebuilding year. You don't cold trade him, but rather have a conversation with him about where he prefers to go, etc, etc. Great guy, but if I'm rebuilding I do consider him as a tradable asset.
I generally think you should get all the assets you can, but Backlund has been an effective shepherd for young players and might be a worthwhile player to maintain some degree of good culture in the room.
His timeline probably lines up more with tear down years than build up years, but I think he'd be good to have regardless. Ideally you keep him until his final TDL and if the Flames are out then send him away for a chance to win knowing he can sign back in the summer.
Decent chance he extends early next summer though.

The Edmonton Oilers and goalie Mike Smith will meet this week to discuss his future, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.

Dreger reported Thursday the two sides will come together soon to discuss the future of the 40-year-old stopper, which is likely to include a season-long stint on long-term injury reserve.
“Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland and his veteran goaltender Mike Smith are discussing his future this week,” Dreger said on Insider Trading. “Now we know that the 40-year-old has dealt with a string of injuries and it’s highly likely that Smith will go on LTIR, long-term injury reserve for the remainder of his contract, which only has one more year on it at $2.2 million.”
Smith was uncertain about what his future would bring in talking about next season.
“I have no idea at this point,” he admitted in his exit interview with media last month. “It’s been a grind for sure. I’m not getting any younger. I don’t know where I’m going to be at, but I know it was a lot more difficult this year than in years past, but I don’t know at this point.”
I don't think that is what LTIR should be for. If he has a specific injury, then they should have to disclose it. If he is just old and broken down, they should have to buy him out or just sit him.

LTIR is for when the player cannot physically perform. Being "broken down" such that a player cannot physically perform is clearly within the definition of what was intended.

Pretty sure that moving Lucic would result in us giving up a pick if we have to dump his contract entirely with no retention. However with Arizona and Anaheim the “front runners”, maybe a chance to move him for nothing if we take a smaller contract back. For example.
Arizona - nick Ritchie. Real salary of $3m, cap hit of $2.5m. Arizona saves 2m in real salary, believe they would be all over this.
Anaheim. 2 options.
Option 1 - Derek Grant. Cap hit 1.5m. Salary 1.75m. Savings of 750k for Anaheim.
Option 2 - John Moore. Salary 2.25m. Cap hit 2.75m. Real money savings of 1.75m for Anaheim.
All 3 players can be buried for additional cap savings if needed. Given that it would appear that we want to make some room, this might be the cheapest way to do this as I don’t think that flames would need to surrender a pick in saving real money for the ducks or coyotes.

It's all about defining why he can't perform. After a summer off why wouldn't he be able to come to training camp and compete for a roster spot? If he passes a physical he's healthy and I imagine he would pass a legit physical.
[QUOTE=The Original FFIV;8372411]So back to some trade speculation

The good news after the Gaudreau debacle is a Capfriendly not only has Monahan and his 6,375,000 added in but it also has Valimaki in and 8 D listed.
The reality is with no Gaudreau the Flames can easiliy sign Tkachuck for up up to 10 mil a year, toss in 6 mill for 6 for a Mangiapane, give Kjillington his bridge deal and have a few million left over.
No more need to "trade Lucic" or worry about Monahans status. They both come off the books next year.
The team is just as strong in Goal, on Defense and down the middle as they were before. They lost a high scoring winger and will see a scoring drop however after year two of Sutter this club will still be top 2-3 defensively.

i actually really like this as an option to not have to give up picks.
he wasn't very good in Toronto but just wasn't a fit for their line-up...think he would be a decent bottom 6 player and would give us $3M in cap space.
