Interesting that the Canucks would choose to go down the same road with Miller that the Flames just did with Gaudreau. Zero chance he re-signs with the Canucks. I suppose they may get a good offer for him at the trade deadline but sometimes you have to accept you aren't going to get a king's ransom for an asset and get some quality assets instead of nothing.

Why zero chance? Maybe he doesn’t want to win and likes the ocean? Nothing makes sense anymore.

Or do you treat him as your own rental.

If the only offer on the table is a late first then I think it’s fair for the GM to go “Not worth it, let’s see what happens with him here and we will re-assess at the deadline.”

I think that’s what happened with Gaudreau too. No reason to sell low in the offseason if you think you can get more at the deadline.

In the Flames case they ended up being first in the division and looked like a true contender. At that point you have to play it out and just hope he re-signs.

There is still value to the org in having a good season ($21M of playoff gate revenue in to Edwards pocketbook) and there is value in the cap space.

I'm sure with injuries and teams under performing there will be a revisit long before the trade deadline, I see them getting a first and a prospect for him when it all pans out

Sign Tkachuk to any contract longer than 2 years

Lock up Bread and Kylington long term

Find a way to dump Looch

Sign Kadri to a fat ticket

Run it back for Sutter’s last year with a roster that looks something like this:

Coleman - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Kadri - Toffoli
Pelletier - Backlund - Dube
Rooney - Monahan - Lewis
Duher

Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Zadorov - Meloche
Valimaki - Mackey

Markstrom
Vladar

Hope Monahan is finally healthy and can attract some bidders at the deadline or be valuable in the playoffs.

If things don’t go well then it’s time to tear it down the following season. Lindholm, Hanifin, Tanev, Zadorov, Toffoli, and Backlund will all be pending UFA’s. Stack up on prospects and picks. Should at least be able to get a couple 1st round picks and few later round ones out of this group.

Markstrom and Tkachuk can go in the off-season for big hauls of picks, prospects, or young roster players (unless you’re able to get Tkachuk on an 8 year deal)

Rebuild is on and we’re left with Bread, Kadri, Coleman, Andersson, Kylington and maybe Tkachuk as the veteran pieces with a huge influx of young talent coming in the next 2-3 years. Starts with Wolf, Coronato, Pelletier, Zary, and Valimaki (hopefully he can turn it around).

Is it the best plan ever? I don’t think so, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Flames go in this direction. They aren’t waving the white flag on this season anyways.

Don’t think your far off on this. I’d like to see Horvat or Miller instead of kadri but overall I don’t think your far off in the roster.

I think this is actually close to what Tre and Flames will actually to do.

I'd start the dismantling and rebuild immediately given there are 3 potential franchise changers in the 2023 NHL draft, but Tre & ownership won't go this route. Guess it will also be super difficult to out-tank Hawks or Coyotes, probably Sharks this season...

Also wildcard is Mony - will he even suit up or go to the infirmary freeing up more cap space...who knows...It'll be tough to watch him again as a shadow of his former self...

Yeah I agree with you on pretty much all of this. I don’t see the Flames not giving it another kick at the can with it being Sutter’s final year on his deal though. Hopefully they can buy some time with Tkachuk too.

Yeah the chances are probably better than zero as you say strangers things have happened. That said it's been a bit of a bumpy road in Vancouver with him and there's always been rumours that he would prefer to play on a team out east like the Rangers. He's also stated that money will talk for him so I guess the Canucks could blow his socks off with a long term deal but I don't get the sense that the new management may want to do that. Time will tell.

Looks like Columbus is up against the cap pretty hard so can’t really make many moves but the Flames have been close to trading Monahan there before so I have wondered with Johnny there now if it is something they could revisit? The Jackets cap situation makes it seem unlikely

That has to be the most depressing list of players I’ve seen in a while.

Coleman on the top line?

Holy ####, this is gonna be a bad season.. or more

Also, you are all aware that all of these players (excluding maybe toffoli, Colman) are gonna have a mediocre year compared to last season.

It would be so Flames though. The 2023 draft is one that could be a big fortune changer for the team as there appears to be a consensus this is the best draft in years. So the Flames will put together a plan where they hope for the best, then begin a forced selloff to leverage the 2024 draft! So Calgary Flames.

I think we're a lot more likely to sign one of Jarnkrok or Stastny to a short term deal than get someone like Kadri. It seems like there's no appetite on the Flames' side for any long term deals until they figure out their RFAs.

No kidding, in Lindholm, Hanifin and Markstrom alone you have 3 firsts right there that likely wouldn’t be protected if dealt to the right teams. Flames should be trying to take advantage of their tradeable assets right now more than ever but they’ll never do it.

How do you get Miller or Horvat without damaging your future?

I mean, it’s basically the same team they had last season minus Gaudreau and add Kadri.

Not a Stanley cup winner in my opinion, but I wouldn’t call it depressing either
