If he signed in Columbus to have more time near his family, shouldn't he have had a far stronger incentive to sign in New Jersey?
To make it clear, I don't believe he signed in Columbus for family reasons at all. I believe he simply made a bad snap decision in an emotional crisis, once his preferred option was off the table.

90 minutes in the air. Time to get to the airport, through security, and wait for the probable delays in takeoff is pretty much the same no matter how far you're flying.

Yeah the Prout thing is hilarious. Of course the guy has fond memories of Columbus… he was a journeyman and that was his best stint.
Anyways, it doesn’t matter really. Everyone sees through it. Johnny made his choice, and that’s that. He was better off not trying to explain it.

Booing players like that (Fox is different) is so often counterproductive. If you want Gaudreau to produce whatever the Columbus version of the Saveon Score and Win is, boo him.

It's Gaudreau not Iginla.

Hard disagree. Johnny reacts very poorly to scorn compared to other players. Let him have it every time and he will shrivel

The guy just signed for $70M. There's no way his parents are flying commercial and dealing with airports and squeezing into cramped planes.
They can private charter easily or even own a private plane.

That's a hell of a lot more expensive; there was some discussion on CP today about just how much. Owning and operating a private jet is not something you can really afford on even a star hockey player's salary, and a private propeller plane is so much slower you might as well fly commercial.
Chartering a small private jet runs several thousand dollars an hour. It wouldn't take very many charter flights to use up the after-tax portion of the extra money Gaudreau is getting from Columbus compared to Jersey.
So it comes back again to this: If he's so keen to be close to his family, why not sign where he can play all his home games in front of them and live within easy driving distance? Why worry about flying them at all?

Maybe he really likes Columbus. Who knows. Especially if the rumor of Devils offering $10m+ is true. Which it seems to be.

They will be chauffered to the airport and flying a chartered jet from the closest executive hangar on their young son's coin, there will be no need for them to suffer the airport horrors that the rest us lowly peasants have to endure.

As I discussed above, you exaggerate how much coin their young son has to spend on such luxuries.

By Jove, I think you're onto something!
But this raises the question: What's Lewis Gross's excuse?

I realize we're upset in Calgary. But NJD must be even more stunned.

One of the replies to the tweet you just quoted said that Gaudreau is going to be booed in at least four arenas – Calgary, Jersey, Philly, and Long Island. I think that's probably right.

Maybe he just really likes Columbus. Its like Calgary (mid-sized city to raise a family) and is close to family and friends. But not too close.
Maybe he really hates Dougie Hamilton.
It honestly doesn't make sense.

Maybe Columbus is close to St Louis (Tkachuck's family) and New Jersey (Johnny's family). And Tkachuk will join him there when he is a UFA.
