Maybe Philly and NJ just didn't really want him when it came down to it.

If he had signed for any of philly, jersey, or the islanders, I would have said respect his decision, he wanted to be close to home

Now.... he should be booed mercilessly whenever he plays in Calgary

So to recap: He's not close to his family, didn't sign for the most money, and didn't pick a winning team or one with a particularly bright future...

Sage to say he just wanted out I guess, but it's shocking that he wound up in Columbus over NJ or NYI.

Less term + less AAV + worse team + worse city = he was very clearly lying throughout this process

Not that hard to understand

This has to be it, right? Cash your paycheques, live out of the spotlight, and probably never win a Cup?!?

Maybe he was just really tired of wearing red and wanted to wear blue for a change? That explanation is more logical than leaving 18 million on the table.

Hmmm. Gaudreau and Gudbranson sign with the same team. On the same day. Let the rumors begin ...

Yep, I don’t buy it. I am convinced him and his team screwed this up.

After everything Columbus has been through, I am happy for them.

But yeah, screw everyone. Very fishy.

Because there really was no good reason for him to leave and refuse the offer the Flames gave him, other than maybe going home to play where his family and friends live. Turns out that was a bunch of hooey. He didn't leave for money reasons either, and he clearly didn't leave to go somewhere that had a better shot at winning a cup. So the only remaining explanation is he just simply did not like the city or team for some reason (comment removed)

I already thinking Gaudreau is dumb for signing in Columbus but signing in Columbus and giving up $18M just so you can complete a 6-year grudge is a little beyond the pale.

People are making a huge deal out of the distance thing, but there have been tons of players who've signed in Western Canada to be "close" to home. The driving distance between Columbus and NJ is less than Calgary to Vancouver. Many players who live in BC, Alberta, or even Manitoba have signed for one of the Western Canadian teams, as it's much easier to get home/have family visit, without the borders and with a sub 2 hour flight.

Still Columbus? Feels like getting dumped for....a real ugly guy with less great career prospects? Maybe Columbus has personality?

People are really underestimating Columbus, they have two very good young C's in Johnson and Sillinger.

Ohio is a dump. Left 15 mil on the table. Going to a team that sucks. Destroys his career legacy. Maybe Columbus has a world class paediatric hospital his wife wants to work at? This is stunning. On many levels.

The only way this makes sense to me is he just doesn't want the pressure of winning. Go to a mediocre team, put up 80 points a year, miss the playoffs, spend more time with family.

Otherwise this is just baffling.
