Another off season of paralysis in other words. Contrast that with Bill Guerin who took quick action to eliminate any distractions and addressed the situation with Talbot.

We know that this is the time that rosters are set and chances of a big trade happening later in the summer are slim. If Tkachuk isn’t moved soon, we will get boxed into yet another corner and risk him signing his QO. Let’s hope that our GM finally learns a lesson and moves quick to avoid being put in another difficult situation. Otherwise good chance we see a repeat of the gaudreau situation with Tkachuk next season.

 The move is simple.

Take the loss, find the best you can for Matthew and trade him for assets.
Sell off @ the deadline and hope you get into the top 3 of next years draft, hopefully win it.
 |
Would be nice but unlikely. No way we get top three pick when you have a Verona caliber goalie and the top 4 D. They may not be cup winners but they are solid enough to defend and keep the season in check. Unless you mean sell everything? No way a normal owner would do that.

We gotta trade Tkachuk now. I just don't see any reason to keep him at all, even if he really wants to stay.

You're right.
Which is why you have to look to sell off more assets like Markstrom, Hanifin, even Lindholm if the insane offer is there for it.

The goal would be having 4+ 2023 1st round picks + a bucket of young 23 or under NHL players and A+ prospects.
Complete re-build and 4 darts to hopefully land you a Bedard/Michkov in 2023.

A coach with 1 year left on his contract and has already “retired” once. GM has on year left also.

I think that there is a divide between folks who think JG was a franchise defining player, and folks who think he was a part of a larger whole.

The 2 years this team won the division was when Johnny finished 4th in league MVP voting. When Johnny was a top 5 player this team was a contender. When he wasn’t they were on the bubble

Yeah, unless they can trade the coach, they're bringing back a lot of the team, and fighting harder to win 2-1 games. I doubt we see much new up front, and maybe a higher priced 4-5 defenceman. Sutter will use this you guys can't win without Gaudreau as a motivator to get the team to committ even harder to not giving up chances and goals against.

The initial core of this team is already gone. Monahan in a wheelchair, Gio gone, Gaudreau gone. What's left is Tkachuck who has shown way less signs of being interested to stay in Calgary than Gaudreau, so the odds for that are very low imo.

To me this is already on a path to an inevitable rebuild, the question is will the management accept that or try to pretend they're still close to being a contender and just need a re-tool.

I think this will be a season where they just ride it out and see how far Darryl can take a less talented team. If by the trade deadline they are out of the playoffs I can see the team starting to sell. If next season goes poorly I can see the rebuild beginning next offseason.
