If we don't trade him now or sign him long term it's exactly the same. Next year this time he's Johnny. If we're in any sort of playoff hunt this manager won't deadline trade him. Rinse and repeat.

I think it's a good day. If he doesn't want to be here, then goodbye. We can use some of that money he turned to get some players to help this team going forward. I want players who want to be here.

Would you be satisfied with those results after 11 top 10 picks in 13 years including 4 1st overalls (1 of which is a generational talent)? Oilers were to joke of pro sports for many years.
I like to ask Oiler Fans when they think back to May 2015 and winning the McLottery if they thought after 7 years the closest they would get to a cup is winning 8 games in one run? Oilers fans I know had the Ron Maclean thoughts of several cups by now

Meh. We wrung every drop out of his term at a killer price. Not that fussed we didn’t get some middle draft pick for his rights.
I’m glad we got what I think will be his best season, and I’m kind of glad we don’t have to pay him for 8 years as if it’ll ever happen again. Not to mention no more hoping that next year will be a playoff domination.
Good luck out there, Johnny.

That’s what loser organizations say when players don’t want to play there
We want skilled players and to win . Then people will want to be here .
Loosing our best player does not help this in any way

The list of players who want to be here is very small. That’s the problem.

Not sure I'm sweating giving up on the return we would have gotten for Johnny's rights from one of the 4 teams that would instantly know they could have him for free (asset wise) in a week. Not sure what difference it made to the Flames in the grand scheme of things.

Think of the draft as the engagement announcement on Facebook.
If it gets to that point, it’s time to give it up and move on.
Especially when a top-2 pick is on the table. I don’t care if it’s a weak draft - if we’d made that deal, Shane Wright would be at our development camp this week.
Now, we have no Gaudreau. We’re about to watch Tkachuk accept his qualifying offer and go to to UFA, because that’s what this team does.
We certainly will never be offered a top-2 pick for him again.
And we haven’t even gotten to the most valuable piece on this roster, Lindholm.
What could a 27 year old Selke-nominated 40G centre under contract for two full seasons at $4.8M fetch?
We’ll never know, because we’re the Calgary Flames, and our GM is a simp.

I mean ... Johnny Hockey has been an exciting Flames player at a bargain for years. I'm not going to do that thing and pretend he sucks ... he doesn't suck, he is a great player
but...
This was the season of his life, wasn't it?
The very high water mark of a great career ...I was a little concerned with carrying 13% of the whole team's cap hit for 8 more years....ages 30 to 38. Maybe he is Teemu Selane esque but I think it's more likely he gets his payday and is more of an 80-point-per-year guy...more like a Matt Duchene kind of numbers on a loser franchise like Philly.
Id rather have Tkachuk for 8 more seasons than Gaudreau.

Why do people think Johnny had no desire to sign here? Is it really that unbelievable that he was genuinely conflicted and used up all his available time to make a huge life decision?
He had every right to go down to the wire and every right to ultimately decide to leave. I wish he chose differently but I respect his choice.
Be upset, be disappointed, but Johnny did nothing wrong here. And frankly I don’t think the Flames did either. Saying they should have traded him earlier while using the power of hindsight is incredibly lazy.
Johnny was making a life altering decision for his family and the Flames didn’t want to lose their star player. Both sides did what they had to. Nobody did anything wrong.
I get it’s an emotional night but good lord some of you are ridiculously dramatic.

Pretty sure Tkachuk can take solace in being the franchise...I don't think he is dying to get out.

For sure. He could the guy here if he wants it. I hope they announce an 8 year extension shortly. It'd really suck if he didn't though

My sense is most Oilers fans are looking ahead to the next few years rather than looking behind at the last 10 given who their top players are and term left on their contracts, but maybe one on the board can chime in. Certainly Oilers have been very bad for the better part of 15 years, but Flames haven't been much better. And now what are we looking forward to? Rebuild or refusal to rebuild, arena arguments with city, etc.

I agree - why not push him for a 115-point season and see how far you get? Players always hyper-produce in contract years. I don't think he hits these numbers if he signed a long-term deal last summer anyways.

Tough loss. But really, what have the Flames done with Gaudreau?
This year was sure fun to watch. But what was the end result. Just squeeked by Dallas and then outclassed by the Oilers. All other seasons either didn’t make the playoffs or were destroyed in them.
We still have a lot of good pieces and a great coach. Now we can probably keep players and have enough cap space to add some others.
Guess we won’t know until next season starts.

I think the Tkachuk thing will be fascinating. On one hand he may take his QO and be traded this season if he doesn’t think the Flames can win soon. On the other hand he may realize that without JG he’s likely not repeating his 100 point season and will try cash in on a long term deal while his value is at its highest.
I could see it going either way.

I think if JG had told the flames before the draft he didn’t plan on signing the rumoured deal of Tkachuk for 2 OA would’ve been taken off the table so that NJ could make a run at JG

Many posters said he would never get back to 99 let alone 115
He is getting a 7 year deal paid like a 100+ point getter, pressure will be on now
PPG or so would be a massive letdown for his new fanbase

This was never about money or the Flames being a bad olace to play but a desire by Johnny to be closer to his family and I respect that. I have no doubt it was a tough decision for Johnny and was probably a reason why it took him so long to reach a decision. I believe he enjoyed playing here and was appreciative of the support he got from management down to the fan base.
