One of the big reasons Markstrom came here was because Calgary offered a NMC. Might be tricky to get him to waive two years in.

You mean like how Tre had leverage when Johnny a NTC? Jesus man, you’re all over the place.

What the trade return would be? What an asinine request that completely misses the point.

I actually don't hate that idea. Ideally Wolf would have at least another season of AHL seasoning but this would be a case of selling high on an asset which is rare for the Flames. Roll with Vladar and Wolf and see what happens. Pipe dream because he's got a NMC but would be interesting to see what a team like the Leafs would give up for Markstrom.

Someone made a good point

Johnny waiting this long ensures the team he goes to didn't have to give us assets to get him resulting in a better team.

No chance I'm cheering for Johnny anymore. Turned his back on being the greatest flame of all time. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Maybe tone it down for a few days? Give people a chance to vent? This is utterly devastating news for the Flames. I see us going from a Stanley Cup contender to a cellar dweller overnight. But sure tell me all is just swell.

Beyond disappointed. Can’t even begin to describe how disappointed I am to hear Johnny not coming back.

In my opinion, this is entirely on management for not getting a deal done when it could’ve been done. Last year in the final season presser, Johnny expressed serious interest in coming back which was later confirmed by his agent.

Then later, Johnny said the two sides almost came together with a deal prior to the start of the season. That’s two chances for management to close the deal and they couldn’t.

Now with the allure of free agency, a pregnant wife and 2 east coast families talking them into coming home, of course it was going to be difficult to pass up.

That’s why Treliving and co, needed to get something done before the season was over. You couldn’t give him even the slightest of chances of touching the market.

This is a dark day today for this franchise and organization, I thank Johnny for everything he did for this franchise, but now we’re left with what could’ve been after quite possibly the most remarkable single season by an individual player in franchise history. We only got to see a line that looked utterly unstoppable at times for 1.25 seasons.

This team could’ve accomplished something special and sadly, now, I can only hope for a rebuild instead of watching this team toil in mediocrity for years to come. Heartbreaking day...

I’m kinda torn on Johnny leaving but at the same time I’m not. IMO Calgary never would of won a cup with our current roster. Johnny is good, but he’s not a playoff star. He played decent in these playoffs but it was against weak teams.

Had Calgary been in the eastern division this year, they would of been knocked out in 4 by any of those 8 teams.

Lindholm is Calgarys best player imo. Very underrated and pretty much a twin of Bergeron. He’s the engine that made that line the power house it was.

We all knew a year ago Johnny wasn’t gonna resign. The writing was all over the wall. This is a failure on management’s part and the flames ownership should be looking for a new GM now.

So he’s gone, let him sign with Philly or anew Jersey. What ever team signs him is gonna regret the 10+ mill they spend a few years down the line. It’s gonna be a rebuild as I doubt Matthew stays now.

There’s only 3 players in this league that are so impactful to a team that they justify a 9 million + salary and that’s Mcdavid, McKinnon and Mathews.

Ohh well, business is business. Just pisses me off Johnny dragged this to the last day when I think most of us can agree he had no intention of re-signing.

Lol. Everything is magic beans. Nothing in sports is guaranteed. It’s called asstet management. You make moves to mitigate the risks and increase the teams chances to succeed.

But you know what has a zero percent chance of turning into our next franchise player? Getting nothing at all.

I'm saying fire Tree now because it's the first time I absolutely feel he is not in control. You're telling me that looked like there's a man who had contingency plans intact?

Sure didn't to me.

All the talk about patience and no knee jerk actions is worrisome. The Treliving I knew chews bubble gum, comes out and says we've been ready for any and all situations and we do our work and get it done.

Instead we got....that.

Fire tree. It's a vote of no confidence.

And to be clear here. I'm fine with Johnny leaving, knew for a lo g time the family home thing had way more weight than other were willing to admit. I'm fine the Flames focused on Johnny to try and get it done.

But, not sounding like you weren't prepared for a highly probable outcome? Nope. Thats not what Wizards do.

Instead of Gandalf, we got Radagast.

what are the oilers going to do if McDavid says he wants a 4 year contract at max 20% cap? trade him?

The Oilers convinced McDavid and the Flames couldn't convince Johnny.

I am just as upset as anyone but it will be ok. This is still a damn good hockey team with a coach that knows how to get the most out of his roster. We have an elite goalie and plenty of depth up front. There is no longer a financial squeeze so there is money to bring Gubranson back and get Mangiapane and Kylington done. If Tkachuk can't get done he will fetch a very good return that can help plug other holes, a true #1 D would be nice. We have Pelletier developing nicely and some other very good young pieces on the way. How many of you lived through the Young Gun era? This is not nearly that bad! It will be interesting to see what Tree does tmrw but I don't think this team takes a big step backwards at all. We move on,
