I'm done. I'm not spending $25,000 a year on tickets to have the Flames throw away assets for nothing. Iginla. Gio, Brodie, and now Gaudreau.
No desire to support a Feeder team for contenders.
I hope the Flames take note as we all cancel. And even more importantly, I hope all 3 levels of our governments do as well. From no arena, to stupid high taxes, to crazy covid restrictions - they've done a great job at sewering our national passion of hockey. Effectively have neutered all the Canadian teams.

Will be interesting to watch as I think he was rather unscathed physically here especially with Lucic and even Tkachuk on the team. Will be different out east for him.

If the Flames were blind to keep Gaudreau for one last season, knowing he would leave, then any other team would have been even more blind to trade good assets to acquire him. At least the Flames can say they got eight seasons of one of the most entertaining players in the league, at no other cost than a 4th-round pick plus salary. Whoever traded for him would have given up more to get less.

Yup, it sure sucks cheering for the only team that ever lost a good player to free agency.

So now we shift to Tkachuk. Does he ask to leave or does he want to prove that he's more than a player who needs Johnny to score?

I am of the belief that agents probably leak stuff to other teams. Using it as a means that interested teams get their hands dirty and start freeing up some cap space because the Flames are offering xxx dollars. I can't really think of any other reason it took this long as I personally have a hard time believing he agonized over this every single day for the last few months and today was the day the light bulb came on that he wanted to play closer to home.

I hope a bunch of season ticket holders feel the same way. I live in Victoria and will not pay a dime towards this team until management is fired or the team is sold

What exactly did Gaudreau and Gross gain by playing him? Nothing.
You know you got played when the other guy leaves the table with his pocket full of your money. Gaudreau did not leave with anything extra by dragging out the negotiations until the last day.
Nobody got played here. The negotiation failed and a deal did not get done. It happens all the time in every kind of business, but usually not in front of a bunch of yahoos who think they could do better.

Gross, tomorrow morning: ‘OK, Philly, OK Devils, here is where we start: The Flames offered $11 million a year.’
Philly and Devils, and possibly others: ‘So what? You were never going to accept that deal anyway. All that matters now is what WE offer.’

Tomorrow they let you know what they got
But regardless, you don’t lose your franchise player for nothing and you don’t get paralyzed waiting this long. He was a fool.

You're right. It's more stupidity than anything. It is a consistent behavior with this team and why it continues to be mediocre. Building something sustainable is beyond their understanding or comprehension.

It's not 1. It's 4! And it's a pattern of ineptitude. Why should I spend all my disposable income to continue supporting a pattern of being useless?
We've had 3 or 4 good chances to win in 30 years. Enough is enough.
I'll watch on TV, and be a fan, but I can't justify spending tens of thousands each year with no payout. The payout is attending an entire playoff run and seeing your team hoist the cup while in attendance. I just don't see that happening in the next decade.
So, like I said, I'm out.

They gained leverage to extract the most money they could out of teams in JGs preferred destinations. So in that way yes Tre got played.

This. Tkachuk now becomes the main man. Does he want it or will be bail too.
I wonder if this also means Monahan stays

Time to become absolutely ruthless about asset management. And that starts with Tkachuk.
|
So much this. No more romanticising about perfect scenarios with players you have hitched your wagon to. They are all mercenaries at the end of the day and are going to do what they think is best for them and that can change quickly so getting assurance one week that the player wants to stay means absolutely nothing if they can't put it to a dotted line on a contract. I would hope he gets to business with Tkachuk quickly and tables a take it or leave it extension offer.

That's just odd thinking. You think the Flyers and Devils are going to work together on this? They are going to be working against each other trying to get a leg up. Gross and Gaudreau now have a ballpark number based on what the Flames had in store and they will work those teams until they get it. I'm sure Gross and Johnny realise he may make less money without the 8th year but don't expect Gross will carry on with teams that way as they will be posturing with those teams just as they did the Flames.
