Nah. You don’t take a look only to sign for 7 years instead of 8

There are only about four teams that bring him as close to his family as he wants. Of those four:
• Rangers had no cap space
• Islanders and Devils weren't competitive and had no reason to spend assets to land Gaudreau in '21-22
• Flyers had no cap space AND weren't competitive.
Any other team that the Flames traded him to would have known they were losing him as a UFA after one year.
So what kind of deal do you think Treliving could have made a year ago?

The only complaint I have is that he didn't let the team know sooner, since it's basically sabotaged the team's ability to conduct all other pending UFA business.
Hopefully it's true that he was just torn, and truly took this long to make his decision.

No kidding, sobering for sure. Drafting a superstar in the 4th round was an incredible find for the organization. If this is the end, sure feels like unfulfilled promise.

Probably better than he got today.
No sense finger pointing for this one move though. It’s the GM’s team, let’s see what he does by training camp.

Gotta be honest. I’m going to be completely checked out on the Flames and hockey in general this year. I’ve got zero interest in watching another rebuild.

If the rumors of player(s) wanting out are true if Johnny didn’t re-sign, I hope the team takes a hard pivot.

I'm not sure how you don't rebuild:
Johnny - Gone
Monahan - Derailed by injuries
Bennett - Traded
Tkachuk - One year from UFA
Valimaki - derailed by injuries
A major retool for Bedard hopefully

Well that's the thing. If they trapped down the same road they're gonna get the same result. Might as well turn your fan card in if they do that.losing your two biggest assets for absolutely nothing. Thats a death knell.

Give me a rebuild rather than overpaying Kadri or Trochek to crazy extensions.
The only way I’d still end up happy is if Malkin signed for 3 years

The one thing I will say is if he never had any intent of signing then he should have told them earlier.

Colossal fail from the pizza boy GM. Watch him compound it even more with a ridiculous Kadri or Kane signing tmrw.
Par for the course for the terrible organization that is the Flames

Johnny lived all the way in Iowa as a 17 year old. I think the idea that location is the only factor is misguided.
I believe it ultimately comes down to AAV and Term

Would it have been more than nothing? Because that’s what we’re about to get. The truth is that’s brutal asset management for the organization. You find a diamond in the 4th round, and he walks for free instead of making a trade before the limited NTC.
