I bet he signs for less than for what the Flames offered for him to stay here.
It’ll be interesting to see what comes out in the wash in the next 48-72 hours but if that’s true and Johnny didn’t take the most money, pretty poor judgement on Tre’s part with managing an asset and some egg on the face of Johnny too for not expressing his desires with the Flames. He can still go and sign to be closer to home but also let the Flames know that at the beginning of the season. I highly doubt Gaudreau was truly clueless on what his decision was going to be this week.

Thought there would have been some more goodwill between the player and the team. If this was his intention all along then why couldn’t he let the team know sooner? The draft would have been a good opportunity to pivot to plan B. Definitely it’s his right, to play his cards this way, but I find it irritating that he wouldn’t have more courtesy towards the team that gave him his chance and made him into an NHL superstar. Very disappointing to say the least.

This should not come as a shock to anyone. It doesn’t mean Calgary’s chances are done with him, but it is not looking good. He wants to see what his options are, and he deserves that. He won’t get more money anywhere else, as Calgary can offer a 8th year, but for Johnny it’s more about location clearly. We all knew he wanted to return home deep down.
He has earned the right to explore and move on if that’s what he wants. Calgary knew this was a risk, and it’s happening.
Now the question will be, are the Flames able to re sign Tkachuk? That’s the next problem.
It's been a growing sentiment since before the draft that if Johnny goes. Chuckys gonna wanna go too.
