When you have to give Philly $11M in assets and take something similar back I don’t think you’ll get the value you think you may, back. Trading big contracts are tough. Personally if we’re going north of $10M or so I’d want Treliving to walk away. Once he becomes an $11M player and he regresses to 90 points in a non contract year I think a lot of people will be really pissed.

That is Brad though, he is a fan of the show me deals. He rarely takes a risk when re-signing his own players. Now all 3 players have showed him and it is likely we lose 1 or 2 of them. Not saying they would have all signed long term contracts last summer, but Brad had the opportunity to sign them long term and did not.

You’re far, far more likely to be killed in a car crash in the U.S. than in a random shooting.

That Tkachuk contract is another great example of when the franchise needed its GM to play hardball and get the team a better deal that didn't result in this one-year RFA season with a massive QO required.
|
Not great value (trading Tkatchuk) >>> no value (letting Johnny walk because they refused to pay $1M)
At this point, in my mind, if Flames fail to re-sign Johnny, the only reasonable explanation that I'd accept as a fan is because Johnny chose to move back home (his right). If it was because Flames decided to penny pinch (after wasting ALL that money on stupid signings in the past), I will be livid as a fan.

Not true, you are more likely to die from a gun than in a car crash in the USA. Significantly more likely if you are male between 25-35.

If Calgary had traded Gaudreau last off-season, it would have been a sell-low scenario, as he was coming off two bad seasons. Likely late 1st and a couple okay prospects. Instead, the Flames won a division and were considered contenders. Didn't work out, but it is what it is and the Flames finished better than 24 other teams in the league.

What changed, getting married changed and having a child is a massive change. If you are married you need to remember the effect your wife makes on life in general. If she says I want to be near the family when I have our child you are an extremely brave man to go against those wishes especially when the opportunity arrives and money wise it’s not going to make a difference to your future life.

You won't get Gaudreau for 9.5M
Either 11M or lose him for nothing
Very easy choice. It's not franchise crippling to pay your top player 1.5M more than expected. (And really who expected 9.5M for the #2 scorer in the league) almost seems like some posters are hedging their bets to complain either way.

Hughes + Gaudreau in NJ would be pretty dynamite. 100+ point seasons for them both going forwards.

Yeah, Gross's MO seems to be pull an eleventh hour "ok fine, fine, I'll do it!" signing (hence my Wed 11:57am EST signing prediction).
Due to that 8th year, unless he can get a team to really pay up the wazoo AND keep Johnny happy, then his best bet is still with Calgary. And if he lets Johnny go to UFA then he likely gets a smaller take overall, as much as 3-4 million USD less total NHL career earnings. Unless he can convince Philly or whoever to fork over McDavid level AAV when they still have RFAs to sign.

Pretty dynamite. But still probably 20+ points out of the playoffs instead of the nearly 40 points NJ missed by this season
Johnny signing in NJ or Philly, neither would be expected to make the playoffs for the first couple of seasons at minimum IMO.
I really just don’t see Johnny signing with either of these non-contenders. He can always force a trade to either in a couple years if he’s really hellbent on playing for them. Gives him a chance to stay competitive in Calgary in the meantime. And get that 8th year in the contract at the same time.

That’s because most of the time the GT are a complete cesspool of the same 5 posters yelling at anyone who disagrees with them.
There is a large number of posters here who refuse to go into GTs lately, (or while sober)

And you don’t think JG is not aware of that possibility. Remove MT and we are put back several years. If you want to win the cup you have to take that into consideration.

When you responded to an individual talking about the gun problem, I thought it was about all gun deaths not random shootings. Ei
Thankfully we live in Canada with gun control to significantly eliminate that problem overall. Either way probably not relevant to whether Johnny decides to sign in Canada.
