Not gonna lie... hearing they've offered a counter has me more optimistic this will get done. Sign our superstar and figure out the rest of the roster later. This needs to get done.

Come on. Players don't do this.
While one or two might forego a quarter or half million on their cap hits in favour of one destination over another, there is not really any such thing as a "home town discount." Or rather, if there is, it is basically negligible. It seems entirely plausible to me that if Gaudreau's number for other teams is $11.0 m, then it maybe would be $10.7 m for the Flames. In the end, these things never amount to much.

Treliving may talk in the media about where they are putting their calories, but their is no reason to believe they haven't been working on plans B through Z. There was nothing stopping them from making moves at the draft, they just had to consider the implications of them with/without Gaudreau, and I suppose how they might impact negotiations.
Having plan Bs is irrelevant if you can't act on them. The team essentially made a choice to still be held captive by Johnny's decision and to have that impact negotiations at the draft. It's not as though they have no control in the situation. They can't force which way Gaudreau lands on his priorities, but they could have imposed their own deadline with best offer available on the table and a point at which they would see that as rejected by Johnny and move on from negotiations.

I hope they get this done. Paying less would be great, but like many others....rather overpay a guy like Gsudresu bt 2 per year, than sign Neal's and Brouwer's.
Hopefully they get a deal in the next 21 and a half hours.
