Here’s why I still have faith it gets done.
If Gaudreau was really dead set on leaving then he really wouldn’t have a reason to play chicken until the deadline here.
He would have told the Flames to try to work out a deal with Philly or New Jersey to try to get the 8th year for himself and a bigger overall contract.

It’s a binary choice, any I told you so is dumb. Anyone attempting to do so should be publicly shamed and pilloried as a very silly and deeply unserious person.

I think this gets done. I really do.
If things were not progressing well, or if JG was inclined towards leaving, his agent would have put out the testing tweet by now.
I think JG is a terrific dude from a great family and he would not have put the Flames in a position where they could not pivot.
I bet we get wind of a deal by 5pm this afternoon.

Kucherov signed for one year of RFA which, to repeat myself, doesn't seemed to matter any more. And yeah 10.5 is fine. Supposedly that's what's now offered. We are talking about 11 million, which is the demand.
The point is that percentages are silly.
You forgot Barkov.

If a counter from Gaudreau's side is made this will get done. If he wanted to leave there would be no counter because if Calgary accepted he wouldn't be like "just kidding!!".
I think 8 years $11 M per will be the final number.

Someone mentioned earlier about members of the Gaudreau family liking certain Tweets as a gauge to measure where he's at with signing a contract with the Flames. Obviously, this is a rational, objective method so I naturally stole it. Happy to report, "Gaudreau Family Likes" are still pointing to Johnny signing here.

Counter!!!! no matter what it takes. 8 X $13mil US. Thats like $20 mil Cdn!
He can move his entire family plus inlaws here and not have to live in Walden or Legacy.

Huh?
Kucherov's numbers were also trending consistently up.

Superstars who don't make it to UFA. Most of them?
Crosby signed a year before his contract was ended twice, so did Malkin. Kane and Toews signed as UFA the off-season before they became it. Doughty signed a year before, Kopitar signed in January. Kucherov, Hedman, Point, Vasilevskiy all signed a year prior, compared to only Stamkos nearing UFA period. Most of the top tier teams have a habit of making sure their best players remain for some reason...
There's a reason people point to Stamkos (courting period) and Landeskog (expansion draft consideration) as the players who signed last minute, because there aren't others.

He and his agent only need to get closer to that deadline to assess how desperate the flames really are. Ie, will the flames make a last ditch increase?
On the other side, the Flames will see closer to 10:00 weather Johnny’s camp is really prepared to lose the 8th year and test free agency. It’s all a big game of chicken and nobody should be surprised that this thing is going down to the wire. Deals get made when we get close to these types of deadlines.
|
Yes, that is exactly what Gilbertson is implying that the team is doing and I would say the amount of pending UFA deals signed within a handful of hours of the deadline is few and far between. I can't recall very many at any rate. Something needs to go down asap or this is going to go down poorly.
