Honestly, I'm hoping they keep one of the big two. Spend the extra dough upgrading the quality of depth in the fw ranks and win the points production war in the aggregate. It's makes so much sense to me. I dont like top heavy, over invested top line teams.

I just figure if they keep Johnny, move chucky for a decent haul of prospects and future, sign someone like Nichushkin for less or the same as what chucky was making. Then use the extra cap space to upgrade players down the line up. Say looch gets dealt too, that's even more space to upgrade spots. Because I'm also fully convinced Pelletier is going to be a middle winger on the main roster next year. That's cap savings and a half.

Then add in you can likely upgrade on guys like Lewis , Ritchie either from the farm of extra cap space. It's a win.

I don't think I agree. We need more top-end talent, not less. Nuchishkin sounds like he's getting close to staying in Colorado.

When you have the best line in hockey, you do what you have to keep it together. We spend enough on the middle six as is - we don't need to dilute the top end of the roster. That will absolutely not result in more success, especially when our middle of the roster is already failing (Monahan) and is likely to falter more as time moves on (Backlund).

Invest in the top talent, and then acquire great value players in trades and free agency like how Tampa and Colorado do it. Paying free agency rates for middle six players just isn't how you build a winner because it comes at the expense of what really drives your team (the top end of your roster).

I think this gets trotted out too frequently. They had a fantastic season, but head to head against our arch rival and we saw just how well they stack up. I would say it’s a top 10 line in the league, but head to head against McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon, Kucherov, I have a hard time saying our line is even on the same level let alone better.

I say this because they’re about to get best line in hockey money, should they stick around these parts.

I dont much like it, but from a person who doesn't like the idea of having chucky sign the 1 year qo so he can just walk away at the end of the year. It's a silver lining.

And as for Mangiapane. He's got the short straw no matter what happens. He's the last at the feeding trough for FA forwards

I doubt many teams are dumb enough to offer sheet unless they feel really, really confident that they’ll make the playoffs.

So, in summary, acquire great value players in free agency, but do pay free agent rates.

Who are these great players wanting to come to Calgary as free agents for less than their actual worth?

You can choose to believe whatever you want. My takeaway is that even without Gaudreau the Flames project to be a 100+ point team.

Absolutely no chance the Flames hit 100 pts without Gaudreau.
Unless you some how manage to replace both his personal output but also the playmaking.
Who’s replacing that?

Need Lucic, Ritchie and the boys to step up 5 on 5.

Didn't read anything here about this **rumor** but the devils are or were interested in Tkachuk.

Makes me wonder rumor or not whats going on behind the scenes.

I very much doubt that anyone is counting on it, but it seems like a distinct possibility. It's not like the roster is bereft of offensive talent in his absence, and the Flames should still be one of the top defensive teams in the League.

Let's not forget that on top of his 115 points, Johnny also had the single greatest 5v5 season since Jagr in the 90s. He's not just one of the top offensive threats in the NHL, he's also a huge part of our defensive structure.

There should be zero doubt that the straw that stirs the Calgary Flames is Johnny Gaudreau.

At this point one must prepare for the distinct possibility that we must deny this undeniable fact come Wednesday in order to be in a positive state of mind for the upcoming season.

Yeah, it will take adjustments to how the team plays, and I am quite sure that the Flames's scoring will go down as a result. But the NHL game is so team-focused on the whole that even the most impactful players do not create such dramatic swings in scoring. It doesn't work like that. This isn't basketball.

100 points isn't some crazy amount of points for a team to get. A good coach alone can almost accomplishment with a mediocre roster. Or a strong year by a goaltender.

No.
18-19 was the exact opposite. Peters was not a great coach, and Smith in net was a rodeo every night!

18-19 was Norris Gio, and Purple Gato line. High-end talent.

I don't think LA, Edmonton, and Washington were particularly good teams this past year. Yet they averaged 101 points between the 3 of them.
