Lebruns sentiment couldn't be further from the actual quote.

The question is why do gm's talk to them when they misrepresent their words.

I’m pretty sure they try to stir up as much controversy/speculation as they can for clicks

Give Johnny what he wants. If my employer has any chance of me doing any work today this deal needs to be done right now.

Click bait. The more clicks they get the more money they make for the people they work for.

I think Treliving is a real solid manager, but hopefully he has learned from this. His deadline needed to be when the trade clause activated, as that was the last date the team had any measure of leverage.
Treliving certainly deserves criticism for mistakes he has made, but my problem with this whole discussion is that I very much doubt this was one of them. You talk about the situation as if the only thing different today from a year ago is the activation of Gaudreau's trade protection, and that is simply not the case. In other words, no one should doubt for a second that Treliving understood the implications of last year's "deadline," and what could potentially happen if they walked past it. It seems impossible to me to imagine that he did not explore the scenarios from that point up to 13 July at that time, and he made his decision fully aware of the outcome that we are currently moving towards. But, the thing is, Gaudreau was not a 115 point player last year, and I very seriously doubt his trade value heading into the summer of 2021 was all that attractive at the time. While I am sure the Flames were hesitant to pay Gaudreau last summer what they are happy to pay him now, by the same token I also think there is no chance Gaudreau was interested in extending at what he appeared to be worth, coming off of two down-seasons.

Quote:
I understand Gaudreau probably wouldn't have signed given the recent history of the team, but now they've charted a course that has cost them assets and left them with only a pail full of hope. Not an enviable position...
It was not "the recent history of the team" that was making Gaudreau reluctant to sign last summer. It was the disappointment of his most recent performances which had significantly affected his value at the time. I am quite sure Gaudreau was much more keen on playing out this year to see if he could garner a better offer with better results. It seems unlikely that he was also mulling over the team's future in his calculations.

Here’s the full article and context of the quotes from Treliving. Fairly optimistic still.

He's played his entire nine-year career with the Flames, who drafted him fourth overall in 2011.
Who could forget the day the Flames drafted him 4th overall. Highest pick in franchise history.

Just note things like this when people are trying to dissect the tone of specific words in a paraphrased statement. In any news article, there is significant truth. But only at a macro level, and often many details are incorrect. So better not to rely on the details which are or aren’t reported.

Yet when it came to the Gaudreau situation they were idiots and had no insight, even though Campbell-Pascal works for ESPN.

Did they quote Treliving or just make guesses. There’s a difference.

I agree, but the issue is it’s one decision that determines the short-term future of the franchise.

If Gaudreau comes back, the Flames can contend for the next several years. If he decides to leave, they are essentially in rebuild mode (or Flames rebuild mode - stuck as a borderline playoff team with no real chance of winning a Cup). It’s hard not to be invested.

The reality is we are most likely not going to be privy to any substantial updates until the decision is made anyways.

All we know is that both sides are working on a deal, which may or may not get done. Almost anything we hear about the negotiations is going to be total speculation. Beating yourself up about the wording tweets from pundits seems totally unnecessary.
