Hopefully its an interesting day, Flames not only need to sort out their signings (in a 4 or 5 days)
However the defense is a mess.
If Tanev is actually out till January.....
Flames need to sort this out sooner than later.

Well I guess someone has to draft 15th. Losing Johnny and keeping Tkachuk will get then a pick around there.
If Johnny walks, the team is bad regardless of who they try to replace him with. If you trade Tkachuk at the deadline for a first in 2023, it's a late first and its not as good as the 2nd OA pick. And the deal had to have been more than just the pick, another high end prospect would help the prospect pool.

Where have you heard that Tanev might be out until January?

Well, I suppose that is one way, of several, it could turn out if you wanted to be pessimistic about it.

It was posted within the trade rumor thread, from a Calgary media prime.

Maybe 5
And Tkachuk will be like Johnny this year at the draft . He’ll sign or walk free. You ain’t going to get a pick for him
|
The Flyers got a nice haul for Giroux from Florida on an expiring contract and he's not as good as Tkachuk is. I think the Flames would be able to parlay Tkachuk into a nice haul of need be at the deadline

We need to not make deadline deals with these type of players and get full value now if they are not going to sign long-term.

True, however I would think the Gaudreau decision has to be made before any thing happens with Tkachuk (i.e. signing, trade etc.)

I doubt Tkachuk will want to re-sign if Johnny walks. Can't really see his value going up around the league in that case. BT already allegedly turned down Eichel for Tkachuk, and we'll see if his one-track dedication to trying to re-sign Tkachuk lands the Flames in a better position than a trade for 2nd OVR. I don't have much hope.

It started as an "if Johnny walks" so if Johnny walks, they likely don't get a return like this (rumoured) offer.
If Johnny extends, trading Tkachuk for that would have been a mistake.

We all know if the Flames are in a playoff spot they won’t sell Tkachuk anyway so may lose him for nothing if we get down the 1 year path. With arbitration rights and 1 year to UFA he holds significant leverage as well.
I also don’t see anyway Tkachuk takes his QO because he can likely argue for more than $9M pretty easy in arbitration which would put the Flames in a tougher spot having to justify paying him less while not pissing him off too much.
Maybe Brad shouldn’t wait until the offseason to try and sign cornerstone players? Maybe it will all work out?

Or, if Gaudreau does resign and Tkachuk wants to walk they trade him for key line up pieces
If Gaudreau does not sign and Tkachuk wants to walk they trade him picks and prospects
My guess, Flames have to wait and see.

If you traded Tkachuk to NJ at the draft for 2 and other parts, you might as well have included Johnny’s rights in that package:
Treliving: “We want you back”
Johnny: “You just traded away my linemate who scored 40 goals last year”
Treliving: “…”

Team is completely paralyzed as the rest of the league does business. Way to go BT.

I doubt anyone here knows what offers the Flames could get for Tkachuk and I’m not sure how Gaudreau’s situation has much bearing on the situation. Are the Devils now no longer interested? I would doubt that very much.

what "business" is more important to the Flames than signing their best player(s)?

Well none of course. Unfortunately not having this done earlier or last off season is now coming back to kick BT in the nuts.

Is there a team in the league that has practiced asset mgmt as badly as the flames? The last good team we basically had to pay Buffalo to take regegr, gave away iginla for a pile of beans and had kipper retire in house. There was no foresight at all. Watching this play out with gaudreau and tkachuk while they are even younger is painful.
I am staggered that we are 5 days from ufa and we're about to let our best player walk for nothing providing one of the biggest fish in the ufa pond in years.
I know it's painful to trade stars but something has to change with this franchise. Johnny should have been dealt a couple of years ago if he didn't want to be here long term.
