That sort of attitude is more disgusting than anything Ovechkin is or isn't saying, honestly. He's a hockey player, not a politician. It doesn't save or help anyone, so you're just cheering for even more people to get hurt. Bizarre.

AMEN! So sick of hearing from virtue signaling blowhards who would probably be the first person to break under such pressure.

I am sure with Kane likely heading out, the Oilers would be interested in signing Putin.

Artemi Panarin did the right thing. Does he risk less than Ovechkin does?
Quote:
Panarin spoke out about the state of Russia’s political and societal landscape and was openly critical of Vladimir Putin. In doing so, he becomes a rarity among his pro sports peers and, by far, the biggest Russian sports star to ever speak out against Putin.

Also, Huntingwhale experienced the war first hand. Pretty ridiculous to call him a "virtue signalling blowhard".

The NHL's lone Russian player who has voiced opposition to Putin, New York Rangers winger Artemi Panarin, erased all elements of that criticism from his Instagram account and made it private.
Even a previously outspoken individual has clammed up. I think they are all pretty frightened...

Panarin has always been anti-Putin. TBF he has very little family - I think he actually has no parents in contact.
Ovie - he's reaping suspicion because of his past comradeship with Putin. I'm also not sure his parents are in danger so much as they are big supporters. Not that those categories are mutually exclusive.

How did he do the right thing if he hasn't spoken out against the war on Ukraine? Isn't refusing to comment on the current situation the coward's way for Russians?

According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, the Capitals asked Ovechkin to take down his Instagram profile pic with Putin and even shut down his account but he declined citing fear for his family's safety.

Dude you continue to be disingenuous. What is your problem?
Panarin has always been outspoken vs Putin. It's not like Putin turned into a piece of #### on Feb 24, 2022.
Ovechkin has always supported Putin and continues to do so.
You are choosing not to see the difference so I'll just let it be with you.

I know he said that. But his parents have always been right in Putin's circle from a sport's perspective.

Clearly though the risk for these players speaking out against him has changed has it not? Putin may not have changed but his behavior sure as #### has.

I dont know, I'm still somewhat sympathetic to Ovechkin on this.
You cant really cozy up to a lunatic and then change your tune when that lunatic goes off the rails.
His fear for his family seems grounded in reality. I think a lot of people would do the same thing, just keep their head down and try not to poke the crazy bear.

It's not me who is choosing not to see the difference. Just look at the thread you're in.
How often were players like Kaprisov and Fedotov in danger before? How often were these players punished just for being in the NHL?
Why hasn't Panarin, some one who has "always" been outspoken against Putin, spoken a word about the war on Ukraine?
I'm not being disingenuous, I'm asking you genuine questions, trusting the answers will help you to put two and two together. The situation was never good, but it is significantly worse now. You pretending that there is no difference between 2019 and 2022? That's disingenuous. Russia is actively punishing anyone who speaks out against them right now in ways we haven't seen in recent history.
It should be a sign that not even Panarin, who once said, "Athletes should pay attention to what’s going on in the country. They should have a position." has taken no position. Tell me, honestly, do you think he's a coward now?

Ovechkin could have taken the route that 98 per cent of Russian athletes have done and just stayed out of politics. But he has been an active and enthusiastic supporter of Putin for more than a decade. As have his parents. They weren’t forced to buddy up with him and partner in his PR projects.
I don’t think Ovechkin has a duty to speak out against the war in Ukraine. But his long-standing role as a cheerleader for Putin’s regime is absolutely something he should wear. He didn’t have to lend his own popularity to the cause of a tyrant - he chose to.

Yeah, it's not like we just found out what Putin is like. We've know about his ways for 20 years, it's just become higher profile now.
