This almost makes the trade DeBrincat for Jones.

Who's a year from UFA and wants mega dollars.
7OA is nothing to sneeze at. It's not a weak draft per se, it's weak at the very top end. There is some depth.

Hawks could have got more. They must not want roster players… this seems multi layered.

I wonder if Pierre McGuire was consulted prior to the deal being made?
Anyway, this was an easy win for the Sens. I haven’t read why Chicago was interested in dealing him considering they’re rebuilding as well? A known good scorer for a 7th overall in a mediocre draft? I’d be quite annoyed if I was a Chicago fan. They should have got a swap option for a future year or something.

I think Kane could really help the Flames if they could fit him in somehow.

Great group of young players to build around. Much better to get these guys used to winning some games now than to stay in a cycle of losing.

That back end needs major help but a trade here or there can change their fortunes quite a bit.

A team who built a three-time Stanley Cup roster by drafting high is trading assets so they can draft high during the best draft in at least 8 years.

Good acquisition by the Sens here. Surprised that Chicago couldn’t get more.

Uhhhh yeah. Except that directly conflicts with them trading two firsts (#12 last year, #6 this year) and Boqvist for Seth Jones. Are they rebuilding or not?

Kane is only owed 2.9 for the rest of the year. But he's a 10.5 cap hit. Can Chicago retain 50% of the AAV but not have to pay cash? That might be attractive to them if they are tanking. The cost - I don't have a clue.
Or Lucic or Monahan for cap reasons plus the real return for Kane.

Pivot! They still had Kane, Toews and Debrincat when they acquired Jones and probably would have liked to see them make some noise but when it became apparent that they couldn't supplement the core they decided to go another direction. They saw the writing on the wall and instead of tolling in mediocrity they are looking to try to build a contender in 4 or 5 years.
Jones is signed long-term and is the type of defenseman you expect to stay steady into his mid 30s, he's only 27. They can build with him.
Now they have a 7th overall this year and three second round picks, three third round picks, plus two firsts next year, two firsts the year after. Seems decent enough.

I think Ottawa is a making a mistake in trying to compete early, but this is a good deal. I don't see a great player available at 7 for them. They would be choosing between small forwards with skill, or one of the non big 2 dmen. not bad but Debrincat is a good get.

Yeah, but the Hawks with Debrincat are a better team without him. Now they get the 7th overall this year, and next year they are pretty much expecting to draft top 5 unless Toews magically becomes top 100 player of all time Toews again.
