Thanks for doing the legwork and posting that, but the data is all from the pandemic - right off the hop sports was disrupted for a long while. I liked the candy brackets, but that’s going to make a dent.
The station was also dealing with Covid and doing shows out of basements. I loved robot Rhett and his motorcycle, but it sounded like ass for 2 years.
I’d like to know how they were doing before Rona took a dump on all our lives.

I don't have the numbers handy, but going from memory, before Covid, 960 was usually about the second or third-last station in the market. I'm sure their raw numbers were better, but their relative position stayed much the same.

A morning show is supposed to have elements of levity, though. I don't think everyone will agree on what expectations are for the AM slot, but it'll never be interview after interview.

That is interesting data, thanks for the post.
How is the data collected? I can see how they would figure out number of listeners if one is connecting through an app, but isn't radio receive only? So how do they know the number of listeners in a car fm/am radio?

Because they have rights to broadcast Blue Jays games, and they don't have the rights for Raptors games!

Who owned Fan960 prior to sports net? They still had flames broadcasting rights at that time, correct?

That shouldn't be the reason why you decide not to talk about a sport. Especially one like the Raptors with huge followers across the country.

Numeris uses devices called Portable People Meters (PPM) to track it. Basically it's a little microphone that randomly selected people wear on their person at all times, and it keeps track by "listening" for code signals in the radio broadcast that are inaudible to human hearing. At the end of the day the person recharges the PPM device and it'll do a data dump back to Numeris servers for analysis.

Listened to the podcasts from boomers last day. Solid stuff. Going to miss those morning shows.
I'm sorry if this has already been discussed but have they announced what's happening in the mornings going forward?

960 CFAC has been owned by Rogers since 1989.
They have had the Flames' radio rights since they switched to the sports format in 2001. Prior to that, the Flames' rights were held by 66-CFR (since about 1990), which has been owned by Rogers since 1999.

Outside of Flames games the programming is atrocious, I can't bear to listen to it for more than a minute or so at a time.

I dont listen all that much anymore, but I have met so many people who have relocated around the world and consider 960 a wonderful way to stay connected to their home and their team.
For that I like it.

One 20 minute commute a year or so ago was all food talk. After that I switched stations whenever they talked food, then gave up entirely.

Well, like some folks online said: the morning show was highly entertaining and took a comedic approach to the world of sports. It was a nice departure from a space that often takes the games and issues too seriously.

You dont even have to look any further than our good friend 'Calgaryboy.'
Listening to games in the middle of the night from the Czech Republic, or hockey talk during the day, etc. To me that is so cool.
I understand Jiri's position on the economics of it, I totally get that, I just like that our ex-pats and foreign fans get that connection to our community and team.
But what I like and what is Financially Viable are often two very separate things.

Nah, paint dries quietly. Morning shows are a bunch of annoying giggly morning people speaking loudly trying to impress each other with their terrible humour. Morning Migraine Central is what it should be called.

Man,I know it's a completely subjective, but the most morning show with plenty of flames talk, warrerners inside view, and then 3 guys who could shoot the ish about food, booze, whatever, was perfect for me.
Toronto sports radio is 100% sports only. It is repetitive and boring.
As someone who left Calgary in my late teens, there was just a homely feel to the show that made me feel like I was back home.
Hope they can maintain some of that going forward
