We will find out that the lure of playing with a Barzal in Long Island or going to play in Philly with his good buddy Kevin Hayes all while being a quick private jet flight away from all the grandparents will be too much to give up.

Saddest part will we will get some scuffed hope and dream that we can still be a contender without Johnny but Lindy is a 20-30 goal guy and Chucky is 70-80 Pts player without him and he too will head home to America.
Johnny’s kid will only be like 7.5 when a max term contract is done. And they have every offseason, plus grandparent trips. I do know JG’s sister tweets about how he loves Calgary and also a bunch of Chris Sutter photos.

Maybe his family is open to moving to Calgary? They could keep a place in Jersey for summer and live in Calgary for the winter. They have said they like the city. Who knows, just a thought.

Just an idea: maybe this discussion around the will-he-won't-he of Gaudreau's potential signing doesn't need a BS police obsessed with call-out culture who thinks the whole fanbase has something wrong with it and resorts to "So Johnny is a liar??" every time someone says he might not want to stay as much as he wants to go home?

I think it'd be cool to have that. But that's just coming from me, a fellow condescending twerp

Call me crazy but I thought Guy bringing his hockey gear to Calgary and playing some beer league shinny was a sign that maybe -- just maybe -- they were seeing what life in Calgary would be like for more than a week at a time.

I actually don't see Guy and Jane moving to Calgary (apparently Jane still works) but I could totally see them helping out with a new baby for the first month or three like lots of grandparents do.

P.S. Without getting all TMZ-ish, but has it been confirmed that Johnny and his wife are expecting? I read that elsewhere but didn't know if that was true or just someone hypothesizing...

It wasn't about if he wants to go home, it was the narrative that everybody knew Landeskog and Stamkos made it clear they wanted to stay where they were but Gaudreau hasn't. Except he clearly has so I called it out. I don't care if you or anybody else doesn't like me taking the optimistic road, too bad. There have been posters on here who have posted he is leaving, I have not said boo in response. Everybody can voice their opinions but if someone posts misinformation or clearly is just trolling I will call their bs. There is always the ignore feature, have at it

I believe it was Coleman that mentioned it at the end of the year. I think it was the same interview where he talked about Gaudreau being able to create a legacy here.

Now being a father of a young baby, I completely get the POV of wanting to be home closer to family and will hold no ill-will towards Johnny if that's what he decides. He owes nothing to the franchise at this point.

Doesn't take away the fact it will be an unmitigated disaster for the Flames playoff/competitive hopes, but such is luck.

If he goes, I'll really be pining for the rebuild path vs filling his absence with other high priced FA's. I just have little faith that a Murray Edwards owned team will have the patience to rebuild should Johnny walk.

I said it before, but I took a job for WAAAAAAAY less money in a different city, and while I miss my family like crazy, they are only a plane ride away, and we and them make frequent trips back and forth. It'll simply come down to, what is best for him and his wife and future child/children. Whether that is being relatively close to family, or having some distance and still be able to get his family in town from time to time. My dad put it best when I moved away. When he immigrated at 18, it cost $2/min for a phone call and they didn't have facetime. Full stop.

That being said, it is a family decision. Would i prefer to be closer to home and with family? Absolutely, especially now that my son is 8 and misses his cousins. But for the last 6-7 years, we've thoroughly enjoyed our independence. That's nothing to say of Johnny's mentality. He will do what's right by his family. I personally want to see the page turned here, and will still happily cheer him on, whatever team he plays for. He "owes" us and Calgary nothing.

Tavares did it but really, how many players leave their team because they want to play for their hometown team?

Colorado on the cusp of greatness? Well they were, but you couldn’t tell it by the POs. They had been a disappointment. And the expansion draft? You know they exposed Landeskog right?
Why is the season after he signed relevant? We're dissecting Stamkos' choice of which contract to ink...

Stamkos only played 17 games that year they missed the PO's - by 1 pt.

Bishop got hurt on Dec 20 after starting 21 of the first 32 games (TBL was 9th in conf at the time). Vasi was 22 yo - he posted a 4-1-1 to close December, but lost his next 6 starts in Jan in regulation (Bishop came back in the midst of that and went 2-0-1). The platooned until TDL where they got Cernak for Bishop.

They actually went 12-2-3 from Feb 4 to March 14. Then Vasi got lit up three games in a row. And then they finished 8-1-1.

So they weren't actually a bad team - the January stretch and another bad stretch from mid-Nov to mid-Dec really killed them. And some growing pains from handing the reins to a 22 yo.

The next year they were back to G7 of ECF against the Caps who went on to win the cup. The year after that they had the best regular season since the '96 Red Wings...though they were swept by CBJ, they followed that up with 3 straight SCFs and at least 2 cups.

Excuse this tangent/rant, but it's just crazy when you dig into this TBL run. 81 playoff wins and counting over the last 8 years, despite winning 0 in two of those years. 2009-16 Blackhawks won 76; '96-'02 Red Wings won 83 (but each of them won at least 2 PO games each season).

As for COL, they had cruised through the first round in 5 or less for the previous 3 years (and again this year), then out in 7/7/6 in rd 2. G7 vs DAL went to OT; they lost G7 to SJ 3-2 (though COL's 2nd goal game with 51 seconds left). Perhaps not that impressive, but still much better than CGY's high water mark of rd 2 G5...

COL also exposed Donskoi (2x3.9M remaining) so they could keep Jost and O'Connor. As I said before, losing Donskoi and trading for Kuemper (1M retained) are two things that probably made it a bit easier for COL to sign Landeskog. The uncertainty from the ED probably played a big role in that situation coming down to the last minute; there is no similar pressure point here.

Just had a peek and noticed that if Gaudreau gets that $80M contract, it will push his career earning over 120M. Not too shabby for a once little kid putting a couple pucks in his underwear to tip the scales to 137lbs.

Iggy for comparison, earned 93M.

Some guy on 960 just now from The Fourth Period says he thinks Gaudreau will not be a Flame next season but that was just his feeling of the situation. I don't know much about The Fourth Period. Are they legit?
