The Vegas Golden Knights just traded Dadonov for less than nothing.
Out: One of their most useful forwards
In: The obligation to pay a player who can't play, but whose cap hit can be LTIR'd once next season starts
They'd have done better just to trade Dadonov for future considerations, but nobody was giving them that.
Remember, for most of last season, Vegas only had the second highest payroll in the NHL. Montreal was first. By the very end of the season, Vegas pulled slightly ahead. Basically, Montreal is getting out of cap hell and gaining a good player, Vegas is losing a good player just to make their cap hell a little more manageable.
I say it looks good on them.

I wish it was as simple as not being allowed to trade injured players. Would clear a lot of it up, but of course new loopholes would probably be found.
The LTIR cap relief is really the problem. If a player's too injured to continue to play in the foreseeable future, it'd be better if it was just treated like a retired contract - it just ends/shifts into some different type of non-cap-related contract so that they player still gets paid, but the team doesn't get the cap hit. Then they're treated as a non-eligible player or something so that contract can't be traded.
I'm not an expert at the "legalese" of it all so apologies if the above is just as confusing as the current setup, lol.

As with Hossa he never intended to play the last years of the contract where his salary dropped considerably. You don't go from playing 25 minutes a game in 22 playoff games to not being able to play anymore unless it's salary related because if he was due to get paid $6 million he would have suited up for the Habs this season. It's a good deal for the players as they still get paid for not playing and it helps the teams avoid salary cap penalties.

I don't care for the LTIR shenanigans, but this ain't that and Vegas is worse after this deal. Montreal is a little better, but still with plenty of cap issues.

Dude the guy has been playing on one ankle for like 3 seasons. His gave his body up for the game, and he physically can’t play anymore. Without significant drugs at least. This was reported by Kypreos years ago.

They could have easily fixed it by simply ruling that it was cap circumvention to begin with, but once they let it happen a couple of times that precedent was set.

Doesn't also mean if they are taking advantage of LTIR at the beginning of the season, they can't accrue cap space during the season? At the very least, they won't be able to get rentals at the deadline. They are putting a lot of faith in a very injury prone roster.

I don't have issues with LTIR space not counting against the cap if the player actually played for the team, but trading for a contract that will only ever be LTIR should count against your cap. It's 100% circumvention in practice. Vegas are a bunch of cheaters and they should feel nothing but pain for decades to come for this.

He was due to get paid 6M. That's what he got. 6M in 2021-2022 where he suited up for a total of 0 games. So either the Canadiens paid him 6M for nothing or they committed insurance fraud ha.
