That’s not two way play! It doesn’t count as backcheck when he just hasn’t gotten up the ice yet.

Is there a link to these vote breakdowns?

This award could easily be renamed as the Bergeron trophy.

In a way, I'm surprised he didn't win more than he has.

Honestly, Matthews got robbed here; could have easily been top 3, definitely should have been top 5. Same is arguably true of Brad Marchand, but there at least you understand that people didn't want to vote for two guys on the same line... Anyway. Too much "reputation" voting as always. Obviously I'm assuming that the normal "best two way forward" standard is being applied as opposed to people voting for a defensive specialist alone.
But anyway, the right guy won, so whatever.

Who in the top 5 isn't as deserving?

As much as I agree that Matthews had an unbelievably strong year defensively - you can't win this award if you don't kill penalties.

After the playoffs Lindholm would come in 4th place on the Flames after Backlund, Coleman and Mangiapane.

Frankenbooger is a two-way player. He has two nostrils.

I still hate how this gets awarded.
Bergeron is elite at keeping play in the offensive zone -- that is different than being a defensive stud. He plays with two other superstars; he starts in the offensive zone 60% of the time -- it's a lot easier to suppress the other's team play under those circumstances.
On his team, Nosek, Coyle, Craig Smith are the guys who get more of the tough defensive assignments and defensive zone starts. They play those tougher minutes so that Bergeron's line can destroy on the offensive end. These are the kinds of guys who should be recognized.
Quick Flames aside: As seen in the playoffs, Darryl actually uses Lindholm / Gaudreau / Tkachuk as the Flames' top shutdown line -- he would put them out for a large portion of defensive zone draws against McDrai. I would want him to learn from the Boston model and use lines 2-4 in the defensive end, and save the top line for easier offensive minutes.
