Man. Tough not to be a disillusioned fan. I didn't know about those emails between Gregson and Bettman. I do distinctly remember the Wideman issue and seeing charts of the spike in penalty calls against Calgary after the incident. And watching ESPN this year, i've heard them say twice that they hope McDavid goes deep into the playoffs.
I'm a pretty level headed fan that deeply believes bad calls even out overtime.
But I feel cheated.

Those emails are fake. It was an April Fools Day story.

Omg. How did i miss that. I'm so gullible outside of work sometimes. Huge relief. Thanks for clarifying.

Exactly.
The NFL had a small market problem, just like every other league. But what they did was promote all games equally - meaning all teams. Wasn't long before fans were just as comfortable with Tennessee or Kansas City as they were with Philadelphia or NY.
The US regular season coverage NEVER shows Canadian teams and rarely shows western teams - it's NY, DET, CHI PHI, NJD, NYI, WAS and PIT over and over. Maybe squeeze STL or LA once in a while. If you want to eliminate the problem, expose and promote the other teams.
The other aspect of it is that it is self-fulfilling. I am tired of the league, tired of SportsNet, tired of the reffing, and frankly, watching a game at home is now favorable to going to the rink. But as a STH, how can I voice my opinion? By cancelling my seasons tickets. Does that provide a voice against any of those things? No, it punishes the Flames. Fans of small market teams get frustrated and dissappear, which punishes those teams, not the league.
Every year, I get closer to cancelling my tickets, but I always get them because I want to support the team (and am fortunate enough to be able to). But I don't want to support the league any more. Very frustrating situation.

I hope somebody in the front office is doing a gaskal-type summary of the sentiments expressed here by people like Enoch Root, Barnet Flame, CGY12 and others for the attention of ownership and senior management; people individually will make their own decisions but I think there is plenty of evidence of an overall shift in sentiment that the Flames can draw a straight line between "game management"/the state of referee'ing and financial harm arising from erosion of demand.
It was interesting reading earlier in the thread an article describing the steps Murray Edwards took with the league following the 2004 debacle. I think that was from 2017 (same article as Campbell copping to the error); would be nice not to have to wait years to find out the team managed to drive change at the league level following this latest installment.

Time to admit that replay just doesn't work in hockey for everything but the most egregious plays.

Slight chicken/egg thing where it's hard to know what's egregious without a review. That's where I think a time limit makes sense.
Inconclusive after 2 minutes? Call on ice stands.
I'd perhaps increase it to 3 minutes in last 10 minutes of regulation/OT.

Yeah, the point of replays was to correct clear missed calls.
Great - if there is clear evidence, make the change. IF you can't determine it in less than 120 seconds, the call stands and you move on.
It really isn't that hard (or shouldn't be)

It should be real time no slow motion 60 seconds. If you have to think about it it isn’t bad enough to be over turned.

I think the issue must be that they're using a bunch of the time to decide what they think the words mean. "Hey, what exactly does "distinct" mean in "distinct kicking motion"? Anyone have a dictionary handy"?
... Wait, no, it can't be that; if they'd looked up the meaning of "distinct" they wouldn't have gotten the call wrong.

Does an overturned goal still count as a shot on net?

Instant reply In all sports should be 2 mins max . If it’s takes more then 2 minutes it’s not conclusive
They can put the time countdown on the scoreboard . Fans can count down in unison .
A 10 minute review can not by definition be conclusive
Instant replay is great - no one wants an incorrect call - but the rule is it has to be conclusive
What’s funny is baseball seems to have gotten it right after 1 season . Few challenges and very little controversy after a disasterous 1st season of replay

Had the Flames won Game 5, there is practically no chance that Vladar was starting Game 6.

The NYR were one bad no goal call in game 5 of the Pitt series of round 1 away from being golfing with the flames. What ifs are kinda lame but #### it makes you wonder.

Yeah the entire reason it exists is because fans used to see one replay and know when a blown call happened instantly. All a review needs to do is avoid that situation.

Done, gone. No more bitching. But these egos are just so colossal and their pride too impenetrable. Like honestly, you clearly ####ed up when you start hunting around journalists twitters deleting videos that obviously show you ####ed up. The NHL just has way too much pride / ego about the state of how they run everything, especially when it comes to officiating and then obviously choosing teams to win / lose. WWE. Such a joke. Show some integrity. Like, even just 1%.

^^ Remember when Wideman got a 20 game suspension? After 19 games, the suspension was reversed into 10 games. That was already crappy, given Wideman served an extra 9 games he shouldn't have. Instead, Gary Bettman doubles down and goes on record to vehemently disagree with the appeal verdict.
Your rules are written so that suspensions have a built in appeal process. Now you want to go on record to disagree with your own league's appeal process and verdict.
The league higher ups have consistently shown a lack of integrity for following their own rules.

highest rated "western conference final game 1" since 1999
not even close to the highest rated game
Blues/Bruins game 7 had almost 9M viewers...this had 1.8. I know these stats because some Oiler fan on here was going on about "nobody wanting to watch the Blues hook and hold their way to a cup"
