If Gaudreau doesn't re-sign, I think it is fair to assume the team would use that money to find another first line player to try and fill his role (someone new on one wing or the other). Tkachuk could move back to LW and the team signs a RW, or vice versa.

But if that doesn't happen then I assume Tkachuck slides to LW and Toffoli is promoted to RW1.

Unless the Flames winning the division puts them ahead of the Wild and Leafs I think they would be at 24.

Locked in at 26 because they won the division. Toronto, Minnesota, did not. The teams in round 3 draft 29, 30, 31, and 32.

Might be the slowest first line in the league. Don't love the look of that line.

Toffoli played into July last season...hopefully he can get in "Flames shape" this summer and have a great season

Who are they finding to fill that role if it's vacant? The team won't be able to do it for 7M on the FA market (at least for anyone worthwhile). If Gaudreau leaves, this team is entering a seriously bad spot.

Even this season's top line was far from speedy. Johnny is shifty, but not fast really (though the fastest of the three). Lindholm is not fast, but not slow. Tkachuk is slow. Their slowness didn't bother them from being the best line in the league.

** in the regular season.
They seemed to not have a higher gear for the playoffs.

Ask the Panthers if regular season recipe guarantees playoff success. In the regular season you are playing different teams every night that aren't doing a lot of preparation specifically for your team. In the playoffs teams are totally focussed on taking away what their opponent does well. It's a lot easier to reduce the effectiveness of slow players than it is to slow down fast players. Flames had no answer for the speed of the Oilers but the Oilers below average blue line had all the answers for Toffoli and Tkachuk.

I think the structure of their forecheck gives them the ability to forecheck effectively, so that helped. This team's work ethic is also second to none. But speed and size seems to be magnified in the playoffs and everybody works hard, so maybe the work ethic advantage now becomes neutralized.

Gaudreau and Lindholm can sill hold their own in the checking department, but Tkachuk especially struggled. Not sure how he ever fixes his playoff flaws as they may be too great to overcome.

Probably, we wouldn’t really have a choice. Can’t afford to lose all 3.

If Tkachuk goes for whatever, I've always thought Mangiapane would be the best guy to fill Chucky's shoes. Left handed shot, great checker, can hold on to pucks, strong along the boards, good vision, excellent nose for net and finishing ability.

I think Bread would be great on a line with Lindholm and Gaudreau. Problem is, it leaves Backlund without Mangiapane and I think it would be hard to find a guy who suits Backlund's game as well as Mangiapane. So it's kind of like, plug one leak and another springs somewhere else.

I really think you have to somewhat discount the stats from game one of Oilers-Flames though.
