If Johnny decides to see what’s out there and a team is offering stupid money 11M plus let him go.

I’m questioning Rupp’s contention that “Calgary won’t be able to match”.

It isn’t 2001. This has been a cap team virtually every year there’s been a cap.

So if someone wants to offer Johnny $14m, I guess we have to walk away.

But they won’t lose him because they can’t afford him.

Marner makes $10.6M.

If Johnny comes in at $11m, it’s still a good deal - he makes the entire thing run.

I agreed with Teeliving on a lot of what he said about the Flames. They did leave a lot left in the tank and the team definitely strayed far away from their game against Edmonton.

Didn't agree about Marky though.

Gonna be a delicate offseason for the Flames. Can't wait to see what training camp looks like.

Another team offering $11mil AAV means the most they can offer is $77mil over the 7 year max.

If I'm Johnny, $80-$84 mil (or $10-$10.5AAV) over 8 years with Calgary sounds like the better deal.

…but #%^* all that noise if we can sign Johnny and Chucky and keep building with those two. Love those guys. I’ll be pretty damn bummed if they don’t both stay.

I thought both 19 and 13 took huge steps this year. I’m hoping for 8 more years in the Flaming C for both guys!
They are elite talent drafted and developed by the flames. I'd much rather build around them, but if one goes, it's clearly rebuild time

Just watched both Chucky and Johnny’s press conference and I am fully on board with bringing them both back 8 year deals each. I have always felt that way but I believe both are willing to sign

Hoping they would both do $10M but with this core they can compete for the next several years. Hopefully the guys like Wolf, Pelletier, Zary, and Coronato pan out and keep this team strong on the back half of those contracts.

Tanev will be LTIR to start the year if he is out 6 months. Not sure about Monahan we will see.

That's it? Usually isn't there a lot more interviews and comments from players on garbage bag day?

Marner is a good comparison ($10.9 AVV), although obviously he signed his deal as a young RFA and it was his second contract so that's a fairly different situation and Dubas was operating differently than most GMs.

Career numbers per game:
Johnny vs Marner
Goals: 0.35 vs 0.32
Assists: 0.66 vs 0.74
Points: 1.01 vs 1.07

Very similar counting stats, but Marner plays almost 2.5 more minutes per game including 2 mins per game on the PK, unlike Gaudreau.

Patrick Kane is a better comparable (imo) for a few reasons. Kane turned 27 in November of the first season of his $10.5M AAV deal, which is much closer to Gaudreau's age (29 when next season starts). Kane's deal was also his third contract and he would have been a UFA had he not extended.

Gaudreau vs Kane (not career stats, but the stats over the contract preceding the biggest deal... also Kane extended a year early)
Goals: 0.35 vs 0.38
Assists: 0.66 vs 0.59
Points: 1.01 vs 0.97

Again, very close and certainly suggesting an 8 figure salary. Playoff performance isn't as different as you might expect as well:
Gaudreau vs Kane
Goals: 0.23 vs 0.33
Assists: 0.55 vs 0.56
Points: 0.77 vs 0.89

Kane signed for a total of $84M over 8 years. I could see Gaudreau potentially accepting a little less given that there are few years at the tail end where he probably won't be producing at an elite level anymore. Kane at the signing of the contract had also won the Calder and the Conn Smythe trophies (he went on to win the Art Ross, Hart, and Ted Lindsay the year before his extension kicked in). Edit: I was surprised by this, but Johnny also made more money over his first two contracts than Kane had (JG $46.2M vs PK $42.7M).

It's going to be really interesting to see where his contact lands. A lot of factors at play, like keeping the group together, being paid in US dollars with most expenses in CAD, distance from family, only 2 elite level seasons, playing for a strong team vs moving to a team with cap room for him, etc.

I was hoping he'd come in below $10M, but that is seeming pretty unlikely.

You guys are changing the narrative here, the posters I have seen (me included) don't want him to leave but also think it is a likely possibility.
I don't think anybody is going to brag they were right about JG leaving if he does.
We just have a belief that it isn't a slam dunk he is back next year.
Your absolute belief in him signing may draw some flack but that is because you refuse to even entertain the thought that the possibility exists.

Also have to take taxes into consideration here, depending on what team he gets offers from.

Luckily the NE teams come with a very similar tax as Calgary so there’s no advantage on that front.

So what happens when they determine Kane still has a valid contract with San Jose???

Obviously he will get paid and San Jose will get a break on the cap, this much is expected. But what about the teams like the Flames and LA who got screwed over by the Oilers adding all those playoffs goals at a $5mil discount to market because the league didn't step in and deal with this expediently.

Take Kane's goals away and the Oilers don't beat LA.

I think the Oilers should be forced to take a cap penalty next year equal to the difference between what they are paying Kane and his actual cap hit with San Jose.

Yep. The Flames are a far classier organization than the Oilers and not throwing players under the bus is one of the many reasons. Even if Markstrom struggled there's nothing constructive that can come from criticizing him in front of media and fans.

Heard Craig Button on the radio the other day blaming Sutter for the loss against the Oilers. (paraphrasing) He was saying that Sutter was being stubborn not altering lines or pulling Markstrom and completely changed the successful season game plan against the Oilers leaving the players confused and it showed on the ice. Didn't sound like he cared for Sutter much, at all.
