I agree, the Flames handled them pretty well tonight.
But still lost.
If we can't beat them when handling McDavid, there's no way he's going silent 3 more games in a row. Not how he is this year.
Flames needed to win tonight or game 2. If you can't split those close games, you lose the series.

Guess I'm not crashing too hard on Sutter. At waht point do you stop playing your 4th line and bottom pairing in a tie game?
It's probably more the D pairing that gives me pause, especially with 7 of them.
Still players are paid to perform. Keep it out of our net and then our best players come on for the next shift to get the GWG.

Markstrom has been the worse goalie in every game this series. I always thought Sutters great skill was recognizing who was playing well and leaning on them. This has not been the case with Markstrom who has been downright terrible, and completely outclassed all post season.
|
I will give you this series. Markstrom is Elliot. Elliot is Markstrom. Sutter really doesn't like Vladar.

Too much perimiter play from the Flames.
Oilers willing to go to the hard areas, the Flames don't seem to be...

Even if this is the end there are a number of things I would like point out:
- This was an excellent year in terms of the season we were got to see from this team, capped off with first place in the division.
- We've run into McDavid and Draisaitl in their prime and they have elevated their team to a new level in these playoffs.
- Our core gained actual valuable experience this year by winning a hard fought series versus Dallas.
Does this feel like a gut punch? Yes, but we as a fanbase should be proud of the boys for what they accomplished this season, if this is the end.
Regardless of the outcome, we are flames fans through every win and loss, and regardless of how this series ends, Edmonton will forever = NG.

Flames are in a slump, similar to their Florida swing this winter.
They gotta shake it quick. Unlikely but gotta

The regular season was fine. But during the playoffs the pace picks up and as a player you either have an extra gear, or you don't. So while the Flames can dance around during the RS like the Harlem Globetrotters, that was likely their ceiling with not much 'extra gear' leftover, as is being proven in this series. Many players such as Hanifin, Tkachuk and Kyllington are struggling with it time and time again. Just not quick enough to make decisions. Hanifin especially. McDavid must do that spin-o-rama move on him 3-4 times a game and he falls for it each time. Frustrating to watch.
So like it or not, the Oilers have an extra gear and CP is also going to have to admit once and for all that McDavid IS a generational player, he is clearly the best in the world, and he is showcasing exactly that. Anybody who says otherwise has E=NG blinders stuck on their face.
The only silver lining is that if (big IF) there is a team to choke away a 3-1 series lead, it's the Oilers. But if there is also a team to put up a chunk of stinker games in a row with the season on the line, it's Calgary. Who knows which of those teams we see next game. Wouldn't be surprised if Calgary finally shows up and wins the next one. But prepping myself for the worst on home ice next game
And finally, 100% #### those ####ty ads right by the blueline that keep changing and morphing in and out as the camera pans around. Could see the players and puck blurring as they went along the graphics. Found myself watching those stupid graphics more than the play at times. WTF. ####ty ads all over the place. Was bad enough with Gamblor ads everywhere. Now it's clogged up all over the ice.

Honestly I have been so invested in this team for the last 2 years. I feel so devastated to see this be how we go out. The Oilers aside I just can't get over how mentally weak and cowardly we look.
And Sutter has definitely been a big let down in the playoffs.

Sutter lost this series by not going to Vladar in Game 2 or Game 3.
Markstrom went 7 games, in a historic goalie battle in round 1. Was the best player for the Flames without question in 5 or 6 of those 7 games.
Gets shelled in Game 1 of this series. Game 2 Vladar should have gotten the net, if not just to give Marky an extra couple days to regroup after the Dallas series, to maybe light a fire under the rest of the team to say "hey, you guys better step up and push the play the other way". After another shaky performance in game 2, there's no excuse in my eyes to go back to Markstrom again, he clearly needs a reset. Game 4 has to be Marky down 2-1, and now every game is an elimination game so it had to be Marky. Sutter missed his opportunity ro change this series in my eyes.

Sorry Flames. I stopped watching you after the first period, just periodic score checks on nhl.com… and it almost worked!
I think the Flames can still take game 5 at home but winning three straight won’t happen unless they get some lights out goaltending. ****.

I thought outside of the first goal Markstrom wasn't that bad... in fact maybe even above-average. He made timely saves.

I didn't see the first three goals but IMO Smith's gaffe cancels out Markstrom's. They got a clean slate after that and they blew it.

I share the same feelings. This team has been bi polar throughout the whole playoffs. Maybe the top line will show up for the last 3 games.

I feel for Kylington. Young guy trying to learn and gets put out in an awful situation with 4 min to go. That’s definitely on coaching. I don’t understand the decision other than the narrative of wanting to roll four lines. Hope this doesn’t ruin his confidence. Dumb move by Sutter and really want to understand the thought process behind that one.
