It says investment income. A good portfolio manager and the hot stock market makes for a good surplus.

The Federal and Provincial governments provided funding for Transit systems due to the pandemic - an extra $70 million to offset Transit losses certainly helps this sunny outlook.

Very low fuel prices, lowering frequency, and switching to smaller size busses (where the operators are paid much less) would have all helped as well.

The temporary injunction has come to an end. Looks to have done the trick. Here's hoping they don't start right up again.

Does the mayor under stand how property taxes work?

so $150 million surplus in 2021 with total expense of how much?

i can not find the 2021 expenses in any media report but 2020 expenses totaled $3.84 billion (3.9%)

3.9% to the good during a very uncertain second year of a pandemic, is extremely fortunate considering the circumstances. in past years Council has put such surpluses to reserves to help with the unexpected ( floods, etc)

Yikes. I'd be interested to see her actual words instead of that paraphrase, but yikes...

in 35 years of being a Calgary homeowner, I have learned that the only time anyone are certain about how much property tax is to be collected... is when the audited statements are revealed.

Until that point, it is estimates ( and sometimes... estimates of estimates)

If that is an accurate quote that should be disqualifying for someone who has been on council. Yikes. Stuff like that really makes it seem like there isn't much there past the "not Farkas" qualification.

The City sets the total taxes to be collected as part of the budget process. Your individual taxes will vary with changes in assessments, but the taxes for the city as a whole don't.

I'm going into politics in my next life

Stephen Carter is no longer chief of staff for Mayor Jyoti Gondek, a spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.
"I love campaigns, campaigning and making a difference. I expect to do more of the same. I loved working with [Gondek] and expect she will achieve great things," Carter said in a statement posted to Twitter.
Carter confirmed to CBC News that his departure was not his idea, adding he was told earlier today and doesn't know why the move was made.

Quote:
An official says Carter would not be paid a severance as he didn't clear his probationary period with the mayor.

This whole thing is crazy. First of all, the city actually lied "Oh no, there's no severence because he didn't pass the probabtionary period.

Then our mayor comes out and says she is being told not to comment on this anymore because its a personal matter. Well no its not, its tax payer dollars being paid out, so we have a right to know. And if its a personal issue, and combined with a lie by the city, then our mayor needs to be investigated.

As well when she did comment on it, she complained about people bringing up and making a case out of little things. However, and first of all, this isn't a little thing, this is a lie. Second of all the comment is pretty disrespectful to the taxpayers.

So far this mayor has been a pretty big disaster.

I'd love to see him go to court, but clearly our mayor doesn't want those details to come out about how a pretty unsavory guy managed to work less then a 100 days and make a 100 grand.

Meanwhile, at the next CBA talks with any union, the city will claim there's no money for raises

Great use of tax dollars. But keep raising taxes!

The people that vote for these clowns are idiots.

It's awfully quiet here from the pro-Gondek crowd.

Imagine if this was a "conservative" mayor, the uproar would be defeaning.
