Ducks Getzlaf announces he will retire at the end of this season

Rare to see a player stick with one team in the Salary Cap era.

https://www.nhl.com/ducks/news/getzl...on/c-332647152

Quote:
Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf today announced his retirement from the NHL at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season. His last home game will take place Sunday, April 24 when the Ducks host the St. Louis Blues at Honda Center (5:30 p.m. PT).

Getzlaf, 36 (5/10/85), is Anaheim's all-time leading scorer in both the regular season and playoffs, and joins a group of 11 other players in NHL history to have captained the same team for 10 years and scored 1,000 points. He is also one of 13 players in hockey history to win two Olympic gold medals and a Stanley Cup championship, and one of 46 NHL players to record 1,000 points with a single franchise (more than 7,400 players have played in the NHL to date). He currently ranks in the top 100 on the NHL's all-time points (88th) and assists (51st) list, and is one of 56 players in NHL history to record 700 assists.

"It's been an honor to play in the NHL and spend my entire professional career with one organization," said Getzlaf. "None of this would have been possible without my family, who offered unwavering love and support each step of the way. Thank you to our owners, Henry and Susan Samueli, for leading an organization committed to success on the ice, but more importantly, to making a positive impact in our community and to those in need.

"A special thanks to the general managers, coaches, support staff, teammates, and of course, our fans. Playing for the Ducks and living in Orange County is a dream for an athlete, and much of that is because of you. Thank you all."

Future Hall Of Famer and the greatest Calgary Hitmen of all-time. He was always frustrating to play against and lit us up consistently for years. Good luck to Ryan in his post-hockey life

Dope. Should've played in the city where he played junior before calling it quits.

Always liked Getzlaf, still has a box at the Saddledome for the Hitmen after all these years.

Agreed. If only Monahan had landed on LTIR a week before the deadline and not after. Dare to dream.

HOF career. Going out on his own terms. Resurgent season for him as well (especially the first half)

Another one gone from 2003 draft. Still a few kicking around, though. Fleury, Bergeron, Burns, Pavelski, Ericksson, Perry, Carter, Brown, Suter, Burns, Richardson, Boyle

Crazy deep draft.

I don’t think he wanted to move though. He was offered that last season as well, and turned it down. He has won his cup.

Good riddance to one of the biggest Flames killers of the last few decades! Seriously though the guy had a fantastic career and got to do it all in sunny California. That's as close to living the dream as it gets.

At the time every team would have done it, Dion was ranked way higher by everyone

Was going to make a joke about him having the worst hair in hockey but didn't want to get slapped.

I feel like he never get enough credit for how good he could be, I always thought he stood at the top of the tier just below Ovie-Crosby-Malkin and I've always been curious how things would have turned out if him and Malkin switched spots: Would Malkin be (relatively) forgotten in the west? Would he thrive as the top guy? Would Getzlaf have lit it up if he was behind Crosby?

I went to a lot of Hitmen games during the 04'05 lockout and always loved watching Getzlaf play.

One of those guys Eastern fans won’t understand is a HOF player. No individual awards or achievements, but a dominating presence night in and night out, one of the best international resumes ever, a playoff monster, 7 PPG seasons, close to career PPG, and top 10 in scoring 3 times.

I don’t think he’s first ballot but he’ll be a lock.

Probably. But one last kick at the can in his hometown? Sounds like a good story to me.

Too bad the timing of Monahan for sure.

I'm sure he would've enjoyed one last good run on a club with a real shot.
