1) Trust that this season was a fluke and his struggle was due to injury and give him another chance
2) Buy him out if they can’t trade him

The answer is simple to me
I would buy him out for sure, he has had a rough last 5 years or so with his injury history

I can not imagine, Monahan in any different role next year than what he was this year (i.e. depth forward).

I hope he can regain his health,

Sounds like it was the same issue on the other hip. Labral tears react well to surgery but if his hips are structurally off he will likely need hip replacement/resurfacing later in life.

Many current and former NHL players have undergone this surgery and returned. Point, Seguin, Pastrnak and Kucherov are recent examples.

Shoulder labrum surgery is also common among NHL'ers.

I don't want to talk about buyouts or trades, that's off in the future. I just think its right to wish him a full recovery, and give credit to him clearly trying to power through an injury that requires surgery.

I don't know what to think.

Dude is injured every year and seems there's not total transparency between him and the team.

If he was hurt prior to the deadline and said nothing, he's ... kind of a jerk.

I wish him well, seems like NHL hockey took a big toll on him. But for the Flames, I hope Monahan finishes this contract on LTIR and gives them cap space to sign Gaudreau and Tkachuk at this point.

What I hope for for Sean…

He has this surgery and a rehab that gets back to something that is close to good health.

He comes back next year a new man. Plays good enough to earn another contract.

Hopefully right here.

I hope Sean regain his health, period. Hockey is just a game, he has the rest of his life to live for.

Get well soon, Sean.

Rather irritated we wasted the best years of a perennial 20+ goal scorer who 1C on the hottest line in the league at a time.

I hope he recovers. And man, if not, I shame in the career he’s had thus far. Injuries bit him in the ass, but let’s remember the purple power period, that was a lot of fun to witness.

My hope is that this latest surgery gets him back to playing at level he used to. It would also enhance his trade value should the Flames ever consider trading him.

It was a bad example...Flames would have had some more cap space yes. They wouldn't have added two more top players though. Example was ridiculous and wouldn't have happened

I think you misinterpret how things went. Judging by Sutter's comments it was a pain that flared up only recently.

Quote:
Well he[Monahan] was frustrated cause after he had the MRI, he'd just.. he thought, quite honestly you think you get an injection and then you're fine. And I said that last week, you know that we're gonna have to give him some days in there thinking that would help, but the MRI reveals the tear so he's got to get it done.
When a reporter asked "It's hurting his on ice ability, but he's not telling you how bad it really is" Sutter replied:
Quote:
Yeah, I don't think it was[really bad], this is an injury that just happened

Yeah I didn't mean to imply that Monahan would intentionally conceal an injury to hurt the team - more that athletes always want to play. "Gimme the injection, I'm good to go." and they may not make the best decision in some cases.

In any case, Flames have some cap room now, wonder if we'll see Ruzicka back up? Carpenter has some mettle, but he hasn't really impressed anyone either, I don't think, he hasn't looked like an answer to any prayers.

1. It's after the deadline. They can't just add another 6M player to replace him and then bring him back in the playoffs when the cap doesn't matter.

2. He's getting season ending surgery. He's not coming back this season like Stone most likely will if Vegas happens to make it.

Sucks to hear it, but it explains a lot as well.

Hoping that Monny has a successful and full recovery.

This is what I am optimistically thinking going forward...

Flames sign Gaudreau for $11 million long term.
They sign one of Tkachuk/Mangepanie and trade the other for a boatload of young/future assets.

Monahan returns as is back to form with his hip problems behind him. He replaces the top six player they traded, and they still get the boatload of young/future players to secure their future.

Any medical professionals care to weigh in on recovery time?

Should he be ready for next season if all goes according to plan?
