Did Field do anything he was supposed to? That asshat's sign was sitting untouched at the Glenmore Trail / Richard Road exit for over a month after the election was decided.

Looks like our new Mayor had a lot of work to do on damage control and repairing her image already.
Quote:
According to the survey, just 38 per cent say they approve of Gondek's performance since taking office five months ago, while 53 per cent say they disapprove.
Such low approval ratings stand out as an anomaly compared to previous ratings of Calgary mayors and there is generally a 'honeymoon phase' for elected officials in the first few months after assuming their role.
ndividual city councillors received roughly 45 per cent support from their constituents, while 31 per cent disapprove and 24 per cent of voters are unsure about the work that has been done.
"It’s also unusual for councillors to have better approval ratings than the mayor, particularly with a council where two-thirds are newcomers," said Henry. "This could be a challenge for Gondek going forward."

Not surprising in the least. Most people I know absolutely seem to hate her.
I'll admit that I did not follow the platforms that closely, but in discussions I have had, most feel that she did indicate things like declaring a climate emergency, or reevaluating the new event center project. Besides that, I couldn't even tell you one thing she has been doing the last few months.

I remember meeting Gondek a few years ago before she ran for councillor, and I came away with a pretty solid impression. Progressive but clear-eyed and pragmatic. Confident but personable. Ambitious but for the right reasons. Overall, definitely Penske material.
I have had no personal interactions with her since, so perhaps she still is all those things in private, but her public actions since have eroded a lot of that initial impression. More often that not, she now comes across as being reactionary, confrontational, and kind of power hungry. I guess I was hoping she could continue a lot of the things that Nenshi was doing, but in a more personable and inclusive manner...but it seems to be going in the opposite direction.
It's still somewhat early, and maybe she can turn it around, but definitely not a great start so far.

Gondek seems to be astute when it comes to municipal policy, but have poor judgement about public statements and what the general public wants from their leaders at this level of government. Her communications team need to explain to her that Joe Q public don’t want mayors wading into every issue under the sun the way federal politicians riling up their base do.

I'd give her a year before judging her long-term success. Still to early to say, and people can make missteps in those early days. Better she get those out now rather than down the line when she's more comfortable with the position.

Judging a new mayor five months into a term? Citizens aren’t known for being astute or aware about local government so I’m not surprised. Give her time.

As a Gondek voter, I'd say I'm rather underwhelmed with her performance thus far. Same goes for my councilor (Penner). I can't say that the long term will definitely be a failure at this point, of course, but I'm definitely hoping to see some improvement in the coming couple of years.

The article/poll does state that this result is anomalously low in comparison to other Mayoral approval ratings. I'm assuming they have similar early polling data to compare against or else they wouldn't make that claim.

Yeah, they quote figures for the last two mayors. Bronconnier was 75% at the same time while Nenshi was an unbelievable 86% approval rating. 38% is pretty dismal during what would normally be a honeymoon period.

Our councilor in Ward 11 is no bueno, was so disappointed when she won over Ward. Gondek, yeah, underwhelmed is a good way to put it.
