I've heard a lot of reference to a "Medical Condition"
Jesus, alopecia is one of the most benign "medical conditions" you could ever experience. It's on the level of eczema.
Now, that's not to say it cannot be difficult to cope with, especially if you're in the public eye, but the severity of her "condition" is not severe enough to avoid a joke altogether.

And she has publicly come out and embraced it.
If it was only known through gossip and she was covering up the condition still, it's a different ball game. Because then it's probably considered more of a sensitive issue that she obviously hasn't given her consent to make it public knowledge.
The fact that she's obviously rolling with it now makes a rather brief, passing joke much less of a big deal.

I'm just shocked "Jada, love ya, GI Jane 2, can't wait to see it" got a laugh, let alone a violent reaction.
It was barely a joke. "Your hair is short now, must be for a role." It certainly wasn't mean spirited.
Rock said worse when he hosted the Oscars in 2016. Gervais has said worse at literally every hosting opportunity he's had.
The only person who crossed a line or looks like a loser is Will Smith.
Of course, this has led to a wave of possibly the dumbest, most annoying people co-opting this into some commentary on their personal gripes with society. Everything from commentary about spousal and parental abuse, trans rights, political correctness, war, etc. Sometimes a thing that happens is just a thing that happens and doesn't need to be related in an abstract way to something else going on in the world to prove your point. It's petty and dumb.

Allegedly, Rock didn't write the joke, only delivered it. I guess Will has more slaps to deliver? Singing telegrams, maybe?
I guess I just wonder if he'd have gone up and slapped Sykes if she'd made the same comment. It wasn't the best joke, but it wasn't a situation where anyone needed their "honor" protected. And seriously, it's 2022. I told my husband I'd have been more upset by his behavior "on my behalf" than the joke. I mean really, I can handle my own ####, especially something like that. I'd have rolled my eyes, the same as she did, and left it at that. Will went and Streisand'd the whole thing. It would have been over in 2 seconds. I think a lot of people were still laughing at the poke Rock was giving Bardem and didn't even hear the GI Jane joke, but Will made sure everyone knew after that.
We do a lot of morbid humor in our house, about medical issues - even though my daughter's cancer was minor and highly treatable, we used the hell out of it - she'd stub her toe or something silly would happen and we would say "Oh, it's because of the cancer." We laugh because what else do we do? While I would have rolled my eyes, I also probably would have had a wry laugh about it because who the hell cares about such a little thing. Hell, my dad was dying of cancer and was joking himself about how he'd haunt us if we did anything more than put him in a plywood box because caskets are ridiculously overpriced. I joked right back that he'd always wanted a log house, maybe now was his chance, he should have a log casket made. *shrug* My dad laughed his ass off and high fived me for it.
I dunno. The reaction seemed way over the top to me.

An actress who literally wears wigs for a living having to *oh no* optionally wear a wig. I get it, it's a medical condition, but there are medical conditions, and then there are medical conditions - you know what I mean? Not to mention the decades of it being perfectly acceptable to make fun of bald men (condition or not).
Personally I think it's more about her not being able to capitalize on her condition if she allows people to make fun of it. Interviews, appearances, benefits, "face of alopecia" etc etc.

Yeah, I would not recommend reading any of the Twitter reaction. I clicked in Minnie's link, read for two minutes, and decided to just close the browser tab before my brain turned to mush.
The lowlight was something along the lines of 'oh so you're against "violent physical assault" but not against "violent verbal assault" against black womxn', at which point the shark was well and properly jumped, and decided against subjecting myself to such bullsh-t any longer.

I find it more weird that anyone would stand up for Chris Rock. The guy was just being an a-hole.
Good on Will Smith. That type of humor is so stupid and lame and I'm 100% fine with slapping someone who thinks that stuff is funny and okay. Also let's not kid ourselves, Chris Rock would have just loved it if Smith had just stuck to words. Now he clearly got a bit shook up, and that's good. Just because you get paid to make others laugh is not an excuse to be a scumbag.
I mean, it was such a lame joke it's not even a joke if she's not there, the only real punchline is "ooh, look I'm being rude to someone in the audience". It's a great example of "taboo breaking" humor done badly. "Oh look, I'm insulting someone for their disabilities". Soooo brave
Gervais, who I also don't find particularly funny, at least roasts people for things they do, and things people totally deserve to get roasted for. You know, roasting DiCaprio for still only dating young girls even though he's getting close to 50, or talking about the racism of Hollywood press, or about Apple's relationship with China, or just the general hypocrisy of the supposed liberals in the audience. In general his target is hypocrisy and immorality, or bad movies. Stuff people did, not something they are.
Making fun of someone's disability is just school bully stuff, it's just Chris Rock being an unimaginative scumbag, and I'm totally for slapping stupid scumbags who make lame insult jokes thinking they're funny. Oscars or not.
I don't get why Americans are so fascinated with this type of low-brow insult humor and roasting, as if there was some taboo there to be broken still. It's never anything clever. They should watch more British comedy shows to see how this stuff is done well.

I think Smith's been emasculated over his marriage after the infidelity of his partner and is a frustrated, repressed man now as a result.
If he was helping himself out he would've left a long time ago. Not like he would've had trouble finding someone else.
Sometimes staying together and sticking it out when there are obvious integrity issues just isn't worth it.
Eventually #### boils over in some way like this.
You don't do crazy things for love, you do crazy things when you're a frustrated guy desperate to regain some semblance of control.
Love is like.. the total opposite of that.

I think the only safe move here is to never laugh at anything ever again, it's just too risky.

I feel kinda sorry for this guy, who people assumed was Will Smith, the actor. Will Smith (the actor) doesn't have any social media other than a barely posted to FB page, I believe, but this guy got the hell tagged out of him on twitter, last night and still a ton of that going on today.

Some jokes are earned, some jokes are out of line.
I think the sentiment from most of us is that at the end of the day, it's on us to have a thick enough hide to take the bad ones, and not to overreact when they come around. Because there will always be inappropriate jabs taken at people as long as people exist.
An attempt to suffocate every one of them is futile.
How about we learn to call things out in the right way, at the right time, and in the right manner?
This, wasn't it.
That's the point.

It's not infidelity when it's consensual. They're polyamorous. It's not that weird. I haven't been in a monogamous relationship for over a decade, and would never go back to the bad old ways.
