I think the point of this trade is to free up one of the Flames 50 NHL contract spots for signing prospects or college UFAs if they need it

He was supposed to be the depth goaltender for the Heat.

saw an opportunity to shore up goal tending depth for no cost
since then things changed and the contract spot was more valuable. Maybe they think they are in the running for a college free agent now.
edit: or maybe they do plan to sign Coronato once his college season is done.
