LeBrun says the Flames were knocked out the Giordano sweepstakes because the CBA wouldn't allow Seattle or even a 3rd party team retain any salary because he was an expansion pick from the Flames (and being able to retain on players that were previously on the roster within a calendar year)

Actually retired or quasi-retired? Like I remember they had to stop actually retiring numbers cause they we're running out.
Although Barilko is a pretty big one. Have to think that would be fully retired. Would they make an exception I wonder?

Yep, and the distraction wouldn't be worth the depth...there is no way he was ever coming back to Calgary this year. Imagine not protecting a guy and spending multiple picks to get him back lol.

According to Lebrun, the Flames actually got clarification from the league on the salary retention rule, so yes they were considering it.

They actually retired all of their formerly honoured numbers a few years ago (I think during their Centennial), but even then, Barilko's had always been retired because he died while still an active player.
