Landeskog to have knee surgery
The timing is perfect for the Avalanche to pull a cap circumvention move as his timeline will be back for the start of the playoffs. That gives the Avs a bunch of cap space at the deadline. The NHL has to stop this going forward or all the high end teams are going to be pulling these shenanigans and having an unfair advantage in the playoffs.

I agree if it is a cap circumvention move. If he does indeed have knee surgery, then arguably it is legit? At least he does not play Sunday!

It is legit but it is something that "has been nagging him ". So it is something players would normally get done in the offseason, nothing that would prevent him from playing bit this way he can get it done now, rest up for a playoff run, and give his team an extra bunch of cap money to spend in more assets at the deadline. This is how teams are going to constantly get around the cap every year.

So, I guess all surgeries during the season should be outlawed?

If you can't beat them join them. Surely Monahan has some nagging injury that will take a few weeks to heal

I really don't have a problem with this as long as the player is truly injured and needs the time off to heal whether it be surgery or whatever. I also would hope the nhl is able to keep tabs on this to make sure the player is really injured. Kept abreast of doctors appointments, surgeries, medication, diagnoses, etc

I very much have a problem with it if teams continue using this as an excuse to acquire players that would otherwise put them over the cap before getting the injured player back right at the start of playoffs.

But that being said if the league is going to allow it to happen, I hope the Flames take advantage of it. I'm sure Monahan has a nagging injury that will keep him out until game one of the playoffs.

Well, if nothing is done, more players with high cap hits will have surgeries during the season and take longer to recover, meaning they will play injured less. That's not all bad.
But it's not great either. This really heavily favors the teams that are already rich (can afford to pay over the cap) and succesful (can afford to rest their top players during the regular season).
There's also the issue of players possibly getting pressured to go on the IR unnecessarily.
I'm guessing LTIR cap relief rules will get looked at during the offseason, mostly because this kind of trickery is a bad look.

I be surprised if anyone has an actual surgery for reasons like this.

What are you talking about? Landeskog is literally doing exactly that. He has a bit of discomfort in his knee, players play through that all the time and get them fixed in the offseason.

I just look at the Vegas situating. Vegas acquires Eichel and Stone goes on LTIR. This totally circumvents the cap but Stones injury is legit and needed time off. I don't have the stats but I don't think Vegas has been that much better with Eichel instead of Stone. Once the playoffs start in sure Stone draws back into the lineup but think of this him and Eichel will pretty much have no practice time together and no games played together. No chemistry whatsoever. It's gonna blow up in their faces IMO

Watch Colorado go all in with a huge jump over the cap come playoffs:
Trade 1:
Colorado trades Byram + 2022 1st round pick to Vancouver for Miller
Trade 2:
Colorado trades Jost + conditional 1st round pick in 2023 (top 5 protected) + 2nd round pick to Philly for Giroux (50% retained).
Landeskog and Girad activated from LTIR first game of the playoffs.
Yikes.

It would actually take more than byram and a late first now.

Unless some team gives the Canucks an outstanding offer no way Vancouver trades Miller

If true… Colorado adds a 2nd round pick + their top prospect. Add in another conditional 2nd round pick in 2024 if they make the conference final this year or next year.
