Default What’s wrong with Dube?

Apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere. But I would like to get people’s thoughts on this.

Last season it looked like there was nowhere to go but up for this kid — in fact I really thought he had surpassed Bennett and had made him expendable. It felt like part of the reason the flames were OK trading him was because of Dube’s progress.

But, here we are. I feel like he’s lost all confidence and the coach seems to be saying it’s his problem to figure out, either playing him minimally or scratching him. Is this a circumstance of growing pains and message sending, or is he done here?

will be interesting to see if he is in the future plans, same with Valamacki. Tough to get into the lineup right now

The NHL needs an EPL style 'Loan' system.

Then we could Loan Dube to the Florida Panthers and when he gets good we can recall him.

Thats the dream.

Progression isn't linear.

A year ago, a lot of fans were ready to throw in the towel on Kylington. And Andersson was trade bait. Let's give him some time.

Also, there are going to be opportunities next year, due to cap constraints. I bet he steps into one of them.

His quality of linemates and a short leash with the head coach.

Dillon Dube in 2021/2022:

xGF%: 56.36
GF%: 40.00
SCF%: 56.98
HDCF%: 57.82

There’s nothing wrong with Dube other than an extended cold snap. He should be playing every night. Acquiring a good 3rd line centre would likely benefit Dube significantly. Right now he’s either playing with Monahan who murders 5v5 scoring for his line, or the 4th line with two other anchors.

True true. Question for me is, what is he doing wrong, and is he not doing what he’s asked to do?

He’s a great skater and has more than decent hands. He even has a nice bit of physicality. It looks like the effort’s there. For me, it’s a tentativeness — he seems really afraid of doing something wrong. Which is probably valid, given who the coach is. But it’s no way to get your game on track.

Yeah.

I just think it's confidence. The game hasn't slowed down for him yet. But I am confident that it will.

IMO, he has the tools - he has speed, smarts, tenacity and grit. He has shown at other levels that he can produce, and he has shown an ability to step it up in big tournaments.

I am not ready to give up on him.

If Sutter is around for a while. Which I bet he will be. I have a feeling Dube and Valimaki will be traded away within the next year.

Sutter doesn’t seem to have a lot of patience for either of them

Sutter wants Dube to learn the details, that’s all. There’s a lot going on on the ice that we don’t see. Same thing happened with OK.

Much like both Backlund and Bennett, Dube has been better at centre than the wing. Granted, it has been only a small sample size where he has lined up there, as the Flames have been a very healthy team.

He also seems to benefit a lot from chemistry. He has been excellent with Mangiapane anytime they have played together, but there is no opportunity for a 5v5 lineup with those two. He has also looked good on the Monahan-Toffoli line, but started losing his defensive assignments and got benched.

I think that he is just going through some growing pains, and there is a decent opportunity to be the 3C with this team next year, which is perfect slotting.

He’s getting Bennett’ed because the team hasn’t given up on Monahan yet.

Third line of him, Toffoli, Pelletier would do some damage.

Dube îs supposed to be a centre and right now Monahan slots in above him.

I'd try Monahan on LW with Dube at C and Toffoli on the RW

I wouldn’t be trading either right now . Flames are going to need some cheap contracts next year after giving out lofty raises to some players . There better off waiting for them to improve . I have no doubt valimaki will be on the team next year.

I would love to see Dube play with Coleman. I think in an ideal world, Dube could turn into another Coleman, but they've barely played together at all this season. Just 26:55 at 5v5 all year.

They're both fast, of similar builds, and have skills. I'd love to see them as wingers on the same line, perhaps with Monahan or Ruzicka as their centre. I think having that level of speed on the wings would work really well with a more deliberate centre.

Bump Toffoli up to line two with Backlund and Mangiapane. That line also has a fair amount of speed and Toffoli would add some more legitimate offensive upside up there.

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Backlund-Toffoli
Dube-Monahan-Coleman
Lucic-Ruzicka-Lewis

Worth a try, IMO.

I like this better. Toffoli needs a passer and Backlund is that more than Monahan. IIRC Monahan and Coleman played well together for a game early in the season (and that’s about all they had). Coleman would up the speed so Dube wouldn’t be so far ahead of the line as well. He’s faster than Toffoli. Also gives the option of switching Monahan to wing. Though he’s far better at FOs.

He's been forced to play on the wing of a centre who cannot play the position well anymore. He should be centering Toffoli if Ruzicka is not.
