The buzzing noise on the C-train

Does anyone know what the buzzing noise on the newer C-train is? Everytime the train slows down, the noise comes on.

I think it's the inverters. IIRC the new trains run on AC power, and the lines are DC power. (or maybe I've got it backwards.)

Today for me it was some Chinese woman blathering into her cell phone. My headphones wouldn't go loud enough to drown her out.

I would have thought maybe regenerative breaking? Does that make that kind of noise?

Its something to do with the breaks. You hear that every time the trains slow down.

You should hear the sound the SkyTrain here in Van when it stops and starts at the stations. It goes from 0 to 60 or so kms/hr in under 7 seconds and reaches a top speed between stations around 90-100kms. Kind of neat too that there is no driver.

Do the busses still make peoples' earphones buzz to the increase and decrease of velocity?

I'm guessing it's either a braking action using the motors (effectively generators), or interference from the electrical system with the PA system.

The new C-Trains are from Dusseldorf and in accordance with the European Union rules for green energy, they run on German Bumblebees.

They are putting sand down on the tracks when braking - kind of an anti-lock system.

The new C-Trains come with AC traction motors. Like Ken0042 said, it's likely that it is the inverters that you are hearing.

loud phone talkers trump all.
cell phones should be banned on public transit, there is nothing more annoying.

I guess this means people who feel the buzz should check out the Dell Days of Deals threads for the noise cancelling headphones!

Ask Colonel Tigh on Battlestar Galactica next week . . . . he'll have the answer by then.
