In 2014, many people were raving about Virtanen's character. Some even wanted the Flames to draft him at 4.

Have the standards for what is considered sexual assault really changed much since the mid 2000s?

My daughter went to school with him. He had a reputation for being a dink, and according to her, he was one.
Have fun in Russia, Jake.

Says a lot about how BS a lot of the "character" claims teams make are. No team is going to come out and say they drafted a tool (well, except the Habs I guess).
Hence I never put any stock into those comments around the draft. Show me your character through actions. I didn't need a GM to tell me that Giordano had a lot of character. I could see it for myself.

Yeah, it can be impossible to get a good read on a person through a job interview, which is precisely how teams arrive at their conclusions regarding a player's "character." Part of the reason for this is that people are all different: some are obvious entitled narcissists, while others are more sensitive to social cues, and able to project avery convincing facade of genuinity (not sure this is a word) and composure. Ibn other words, guys like Virtanen can be very good at projecting an appealing public persona.

‘Genuinity’ is, in effect, an error masquerading as a word. It is used (according to Google Ngram) something like 1/300 as often as ‘genuineness’, which is the accepted word to carry that meaning. This is the sort of frequency of usage you get when people know there is a particular word they want, can't recall it offhand, try to reconstruct it from bits and pieces according to the rules of English word-formation, and get it slightly wrong.*
You could, in fact, say that ‘genuinity’ is a very convincing facade of a word. It is another example of the kind of clever fakery exhibited in social situations by the sort of people you are talking about. It's very apt, because while not being right, it is wrong in precisely the right way.
*If you did follow the rules exactly, you would end up with ‘genuity’, which was a real and current word up until the 19th century but is now effectively obsolete.

I don't recall a lot of people talking about Virtanen's character. I do recall a lot of talk about low hockey IQ. People were generally down on him in his draft year, which surprised me because he was a Hitman (I really hadn't watched him much).

The year the NHL produced a video from the Combine, and I remember lots of talk about how impressive Virtanen came across in his interviews.

Well, in that case people are pretty daft if they base a character assessment on an interview. Sounds like he had plenty of baggage in the WHL.

Considering how difficult it can be to get a conviction years after the fact, they must have some pretty solid evidence to be pressing charges at this point.
I wonder if the Oilers show interest in signing him now.

At least he didn't make a tough guy pose to anyone. Then he would be a real enemy of the people.
