You guys can balk at what the Coyotes are asking for, but have to keep in mind that a bonafide #1 at half the cap of Eichel has to be factored in. Add in the fact Arizona can take cap dumps for days, and they will to maximize any kind of return on a franchise D.

I'd pay a 1st if Montreal retained half the salary, and I think they would.

Toffoli has produced more than Monahan in the last three years and is making a third less. I don't see Montreal having interest moving him and much less so adding Monahan to the deal.

Montreal is about to go scorched earth rebuild. I think all their veterans could be had for the right price.

I would not pay a 1st for Toffoli unless the Habs took Monahan back (never thought I would say that). Flames should not be paying a 1st for a 30+ winger unless it helps them do other things and shedding that $2.125M for next year is a huge help in keeping our 3 high end left shot wingers.

I know they should and it makes sense to do so, but what evidence is there they would ever go scorched earth? That has never happened with them.

They just signed Petry, Gallagher and Andersson to long term deals, I don't see them going full scorched earth. This year was a disaster but last year they still played well, so the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

Toffoli could be had for sure, but he's on a solid deal considering his production. He can probably fetch a 1st on his own without Montreal having to take a huge cap dump back, which Monahan is right now and will be if he's playing on the fourth line.

They did also sign those players under the previous GM. It is possible that Jeff Gorton is looking for a significant revamp of the roster. It is also possible that they are just focused on some retooling. We won’t know till they start making moves.

Gorton has been hinting at it and if there is a divorce in the works for Price and the team then I think it makes a ton of sense for them to look to tear it down. No guarantee it happens but I think it is far more likely with the management change and the futures of their franchise cornerstones (Weber and Price) in doubt.

All of these were Bergevin moves though and he is gone. Last year they were a very mediocre team that got hot at the right time and made the finals. This year they are worse than they actually are but like I posted above. I think this all hinges on Price.

If he comes back healthy, motivated and in the right head space the Habs can and likely should retool. If he is done playing or wants to move on from Montreal then now is a great time to rebuild.

If it makes people feel better, instead of thinking of it as an 'Eichel like return' they could think of it as 'barely more than a Hamonic like return'.

Toffoli can likely be moved for a first by himself. Why does Montreal take back Monny for nothing?

Many teams would bid for Toffoli, making Monny part of the deal moves Calgary to the back of the bus. Cap is king these days.

Targets around the league as teams start to look like they are falling off the pace for the playoffs.

Devils: Andreas Johnsson. Has a hit of $3.4M and one year remaining on his contract. Can play both wings and has shown he can finish.

Islanders: Anthony Beauvillier. Has a hit of $4.15M for another two seasons. Plays LW but a guy that has shown the ability to put the puck in the net. Struggling a bit this year, so maybe a change of scenery.

Senators: Connor Brown. Long time target of discussion. $3.6M cap hit for one more season. Right shooting RW that can play on second or third line. Might come cheap?

Kraken: Jordan Eberle. Two more years at $5.5M, but a guy that fits a real need on this team. Can put the puck in the net and can skate. Has the M-NTC, so we might be screwed there.

Coyotes: Phil "The Thrill" Kessel. The round mound of rebound always seems to find the back of the net. Expiring contract that might come cheap. A RW with finish, and he may keep the hot dog concessionaires employed during COVID restrictions.

I like the Connor Brown look. Him and yeast mode had some great chemistry at the worlds.

I would think they grab Toffoli to play with Monahan. The guy needs someone to play with. Coleman-Monahan-Toffoli could be a pretty good line.

Yup.

I don't know why Sutter seems to be so adamant that Lewis+Monahan should be a thing.

Monahan+Lewis: TOI- 145 Minutes, xGF - 39.01%

Monahan w/o Lewis: TOI- 210 Minutes, xGF - 56.6%

And it's not like other combinations haven't worked:

Lucic-Monahan-Dube: 64.2% xGF - 30 Minutes
Pitlick-Monahan-Dube: 60.8% xGF - 66 Minutes
Mangiapane-Monahan-Coleman: 53.0% xGF - 42 Minutes

Monahan maybe could have had a bounce back season, and he has been good on the PP, but no chance he's going to bounce back at 5v5 playing with Lewis and Richardson.
