Biden’s legislative is foundering because the Dems don’t have secure control of the Senate, not because (like most Democrats) he’s a moderate. The key struggle in U.S. politics going forward will be over Senate seats in battleground states. That’s where Democrats need to focus their energies.

Truly one of the dumbest things I'll ever admit to saying, and there is a lot of competition for the title.

So who was your candidate that would have beat Trump and be doing so much better right now? Because it's basically impossible to get anything done in the current climate.

Really holding those feet to the fire, eh?
At least the Dems are focusing on the important stuff...

What does another candidate have to do with Biden's current performance? There are plenty of things Biden can do (e.g. cancel student debt) that don't require him to dick around with the Senate.

American democracy seems like it is dead. I think we're going to see a dictatorial rise or maybe civil war 2 in our lifetimes. It's very end of Roman Republic adjacent; social order is breaking down, inequality is rising, the wealthy have effectively split the political power into two groups (optimates vs populares), the political power is stagnate because the two ruling groups can't agree on anything (more out of spite for each other than anything else), and the vast majority of the lower classes seem to have walked into largely giving up their political power. Trump always seemed a bit like a Dumb as #### version of Sulla to me.
I am very pessimistic about this all. I know dooming is kind of lame but it is really hard, as someone who studied political science and history, to imagine them righting this ship, when the vast majority of political actors seem to have no will or desire to do anything but run it into the ground. Add on compounding issues like climate change, pandemic, rapid inflation, chinese economic ascendence (competitor state), and bellicose global dictators and the situation is absolutely primed to blow.
As Canada, with all our water and natural resources, how can we not be worried about a flailing, failing america? How long will they stay nice neighbors? How long can they stay nice neighbors if they begin to starve/ thirst?

Biden made a bunch of promises to secure the progressive vote and has delivered on none of them. There's only so much you can blame on "rogue Dems" for not towing the party line. He has a variety of tools he can use and he's pulling none of them out. If the Dems don't do something, they're going to get annihilated in 2022 and 2024. I mean, it's far past time to panic for the Dems and no one is panicking. But thank god for that legislation barring Trump from being buried in Arlington?? What about health care? Student loans? The border? BBB? Even temporary debt forgiveness?? No? Okay. I don't always agree with AOC, but she's bang on here.

I could definitely see the end of American democracy during our lifetimes, and it honestly wouldn't surprise me if this becomes a reality over the next 10 - 15 years. We're already seeing it. The mechanisms for authoritarian rule are already being put in place by Republicans, and if the left/Dems/progressives can't find a way to come together and fight back, the chances of them winning another election ever again are slim to none.
I suppose there's a possibility that we'd see the U.S. break up into separate countries sometime in the future, but I don't even know how that would work? 10 years ago we'd all be called crazy for even suggesting something like this, but if that country continues its downward spiral, who knows what could happen.
I think Canada needs to start preparing now for this inevitability and try to come up with ways to at least minimize the damage as much as we can. I highly doubt we'd see an actual invasion of the north anytime soon. But the potential is certainly there, especially if the GQP/Trump cult is in charge. Those people are bats*** insane and capable of anything.

I agree, 10 years ago this would have seemed a ridiculous, stupid thing to consider. But now it almost seems unavoidable? I don't know... I might be too gloomy but I really don't understand what can be salvaged at this point. Splitting up into smaller regional countries is perhaps the best solution, but it's bad and likely would still lead to small wars or fights. That's how the first civil war started after all. I personally think both parties would turn imperialist/expansionist before conceding seccession of american territory and disolution of federal authority/ their military.

Too much doom and gloom here. The United States can pretty much run on autopilot no matter who's in power. It'll just keep switching every 4 or 8 years.

Your doom & gloom statement is weird. It is doom & gloom for millions of people -- it's never-ending for the middle to lower class and you're right, it doesn't matter who they elect. Neither the republicans nor the dems give a #### about these people. To me that means the current system is a failure.

The dems will never regain a real majority in the senate, it strongly favors republicans by design. California has more people in it than the 16 smallest red states put together, but only get 2 senate votes compared to their 32. The US is governed by a tyranny of the minority, it's the biggest failing of their democracy

The US as a country was always designed to have tension between the atates rights and the federal government.
The current role of the federal government doesn’t really fit the electoral structure of the system. I think don’t think you see separation, I think you see a significantly reduced federal powers like you see in the recent Supreme Court rulings.

That is the balance isn't it? That the house is by population and the senate is by state. It just happens that the Democrats are popular in California but it could easily be the other way around.
Do we really want a situation like Alberta where it gets absolutely no say?

Thus is the US politics page, I don't want to go too far down the rabbit hole but.... WHAT?
The last Prime Minister was literally from Calgary.
