Revisiting Seattle's expansion draft
Slow hockey day with the Flames on a COVID break. Let's check in on how Seattle's expansion picks look now.
From Philly, they could've had:
Gostisbehere, tied for the team lead, 17p in 27g, and only a -5 on a terrible team.
Voracek, one off the team lead with 22p in 26g
Atkinson (via Voracek one-for-one), 23p in 28g
Instead they took.. checks notes.. Carsen Twarynski, who has 0p in 0GP.
From Calgary, obviously they could've had the amazing Kylington + whatever compensation the Flames offered for Gio.
Others please contribute with how their other non picks are doing. PS I know the flyers are terrible right now.

Max Domi GP 16 G 6 A 8 PTS 14
Instead selected Gavin Bayreuther who has GP 15 G 0 A 4 PTS 4 … for Columbus??? Lol because they lost them back to Columbus via UFA a week later?!?! Like what??? Brutal draft by Francis on so many levels.

Yeah, but if it weren't for Arizona beating them at their own game and Montreal being unintentionally bad, they'd be in line for a #1 overall draft pick.

What's the point of this thread?
Do you know what offers were on the table for Seattle?
This draft was much different than the Vegas situation. In that scenario, you had GMs who overvalued cap space and Vegas ended up with a windfall. The GMs learned and weren't going to get fleeced again.
Saying they should have taken Kylington+whatever the Flames were offering is a pointless exercise without knowing what the + was.
Carey Price was on offer and he wasn't selected. Does Francis get kudos for that?

Kylington plus nothing would have been the right choice though.

With the benefit of hindsight, probably.
At the time of the draft. Not even close.
Kylington was in the press box eating popcorn when the Flames opened up 2021-22.

They could have taken Kylington without a deal. See also Tarasenko, Dadonov, Neideraiter/Bean, Domi, Duchene, Milano.

what's the point of any thread? its fun to discuss this stuff. Their picks seemed terrible at the time and it so far it looks like they were.
Gio might have been the "right" pick at the time but he is one of the few and even then a 38 year old for an expansion team seems kinda risky. To be fair though I doubt the Flames were offering much, I think they wanted the cap space.

The point of this thread is to call our a division rival and their mistakes. Now let us all point and laugh.

I think Kylington has been great because of Sutter and Tanev. Would Seattle be able to offer the protection?

Fair enough. And maybe they get a haul for Giordano at the deadline that makes it still look like the right choice.
But there have been a number of headscratchers.
Part of the difference vs Vegas is the other GMs learned, part of it is Francis doing a bad job.

I think you need to wait a bit before you assess his job.
He has cap space and zero bad contracts. Everyone is ignoring the value of that asset.

The point is they could have taken Kylington and negotiated an extra draft pick for doing so.
So yeah, this worked out quite well for Calgary.

Lol I mean honestly, pretty much anyone with half a hockey brain ended up with a better mock draft than the bizarre corner that idiot painted himself into.

In hindsight, yes.
But who really was picking up guys like Duchene etc. ?
Even Tarasenko looked like damaged goods at the time.
Even lots of posters here had given up on Kylington. And Gio is a guy they can easily move at the deadline if they choose.
I just think you need to judge Francis on a more than few months basis.
I recall many complaining they could have done a better job than Vegas after their draft too.

I'm fine with what they did as they clearly had an eye on being in the running for some possible generational players in the upcoming drafts. Most of the players listed are simply stop gap players that would have made them not good enough to win anything and too good to get a high draft pick to build their future around. You only have to look at the Ducks to see how fast a team can turn things around if they pick the right in the draft as I would rather have Zegras, Drysdale, and McTavish than any of the players they passed on. The worst thing that could happen to an expansion team is trying to emulate the Knights and failing as the organization would be trapped in the medocrity of not being bad enough to get on the right path of rebuilding. Look at the coach hire. That hire doesn't scream we want to win now.

Vegas had disproven it’s critics well before this point in the season. The Kraken will finish near the very bottom of the league without a whole lot of upward trajectory.
